“Just Between You and Me” takes its name from April Wine’s first single to break into the Billboard top 20. The track off the 1981 album “The Nature of the Beast” became the group’s biggest success, selling more than a million copies in the U.S. that year and earning international platinum status. In 2008, Goodwyn was heading to a Montreal airport to catch a flight to Halifax where April Wine was headlining an event. The Woodstock, N.B.-born singer-songwriter passed out as a result of severe intoxication. The alcohol abuse led to internal bleeding and blood loss so severe he would have died within 24 hours without hospitalization. “It’s not the perfect world for me, but I’ve been very lucky, I’m very grateful. And like I say, I’m still doin’ it so it can’t be that bad,” he added, laughing. “I’m still out there doing it, and I’d miss it if I didn’t do it.”Lauren La Rose – The Canadian Press “There was one moment that changed the course of things, and for me, that was it: realizing my mortality, realizing I was dying and I didn’t know it,” recalled Goodwyn during a recent interview in downtown Toronto. Advertisement Login/Register With: April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn has experienced his share of highs and heartaches in and out of the spotlight, but a near brush with death motivated the musician to steer towards a smoother path. “I never had the confidence. I didn’t even like my singing at all, the sound of my voice until many albums into the journey,” he admitted. “I like to be surrounded by people. I’m a very quiet person. “I was sick for a long time. I was skin and bones,” added Goodwyn, who was treated in a hospital near Montreal followed by a stint at a Toronto rehab facility. “After I was well again, I thought of how lucky I was and how grateful, and I started thinking about putting a lot of things down on paper.” “It messed up the whole family,” he recalled. “It was difficult for my dad, and there were three young boys, so it was a very dysfunctional family after that. Luckily, I had music to turn to.” Goodwyn joined forces with brothers David and Ritchie Henman and their cousin Jim Henman to form April Wine in Nova Scotia in 1969, and later relocated to Montreal. Over more than a decade, the group developed a catalogue stacked with hits including “Tonight is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love,” “You Won’t Dance With Me” and the Hot Chocolate cover “You Could Have Been A Lady.” “Keith Richards got busted for heroin and that was big news,” he said. “Charlie Watts and Billy Wyman were private people. But (Mick) Jagger, on the other hand, was right in your face. Wonderful big smile. I find him very personable. In the opening pages of his new memoir “Just Between You and Me” (HarperCollins), an unsettling scene plays out far from the concert stage. “Watching him warm up in the afternoon, getting on this little stage, bouncing up and down, he’s a real pro. He’s in the moment always.” Facebook The memoir chronicles Goodwyn’s steady climb to stardom as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the rock group, which was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2010. The book also delves into Goodwyn’s tough upbringing in rural Nova Scotia and how he coped with his mother’s death from brain cancer before he turned 11. But as time went on, I became more to the front of the group just because of circumstances, my writing and so forth,” he continued. While the band has experienced a revolving door of lineup changes, Goodwyn has remained the constant and continues to lead April Wine on tours. Despite his foray into solo work, he never had the desire to go it entirely alone. Twitter
New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das will hold discussions on March 26 with representatives of trade bodies and credit rating agencies on interest rate and steps to boost economic activities, said sources. The meeting, which comes ahead of the next financial year’s first MPC meet scheduled for April 4, is aimed at broadening the consultation process, they added. The bi-monthly policy, to be finalised by the six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), assumes significance as it would be announced just a week before the commencement of the seven phase general elections beginning April 11. While the RBI cut the interest rate in its February monetary policy after a gap of 18 months, industry has started clamouring for another rate cut as retail inflation is below the RBI’s benchmark of 4 per cent and need for boosting growth is pressing. There have also been complaints that banks do not pass on the entire benefit of policy rate cut to borrowers. Last month, the governor had held meeting with top officials of public and private sector banks to discuss rate transmission and persuade them to pass on the benefit of lower interest rates to the consumers.

Enduring political and personal rifts are undermining Guinea-Bissau’s efforts to attract regional and international support, public administration and security sector reforms are vital, and international aid is crucial to help the small West African country fight mounting drug trafficking and organized crime, according to a United Nations report released today.“Persistent and bitter divisions among key national stakeholders, both political and personal, threaten to compromise the independence and authority of two vital State institutions, the judiciary and the legislature,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in the report to the Security Council. He cites increasingly bitter disputes between the Government and supporters of the Speaker of the National Assembly over the appointment of proxy parliamentarians to replace six opposition legislators, five of whom broke with their party to support the election of President João Bernardo Vieira, whose Government they have since joined. He also notes the attempted arrest of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Júnior and the disturbances following the killing of former Navy Chief of Staff Lamine Sanhá.The report covers the latest three months of the work of the UN Peacebuilding Support Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNOGBIS), set up in 1999 to help the country emerge from the devastation of a civil war and various coups in which thousands of people were killed, wounded or forced from their homes.“I have strongly urged all actors to use the proper constitutional channels to resolve their disputes and allow the various State institutions to focus on discharging their functions in the interest of the people of Guinea-Bissau,” Mr. Ban writes.“Efforts by the Government to take the lead in improving living conditions in the country and to strengthen national reconciliation and democratic governance are unlikely to attract regional and international support if the independence and authority of the judiciary and the legislature are undermined.”Mr. Ban welcomes “constructive discussions” now underway to strengthen cooperation between the Government and international financial institutions, including emergency post-conflict aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).He notes that the Government was commended in the last UN report for its smooth organization of a donors’ conference in November, but adds: “It is vital that the efforts by the Government to implement its reform strategy be maintained, especially those commitments it has undertaken since the conference.“It is crucial that the Government remain particularly focused on public administration and security sector reforms, which are key platforms for the poverty reduction strategy and the promotion of stability and development.”The UN will continue to support Government efforts by coordinating aid across a range of activities and providing capacity-building to security sector institutions in the areas of management and oversight, Mr. Ban writes. He stresses that in security sector reform the Government faces “immense challenges” in combating the growing danger of international drug trafficking and organized crime. “This worrying trend must be reversed, but the Government cannot do that effectively on its own,” he says, noting that the effects of such crime are felt not only in the country but throughout the sub-region and beyond.“I urge the international community to respond generously to the Government’s appeal for financial and material assistance to help Guinea-Bissau tackle these grave challenges. I urge the Government to continue to show political resolve and determination to fight impunity in general, and organized crime and drug trafficking in particular,” he adds.Mr. Ban notes that socio-economic situation remains “very fragile,” with most of the financial pledges made at the November donors’ conference outstanding while social tensions continued to rise as trade unions embarked on a series of strikes, protesting, among other issues, salary arrears and the lack of dialogue.Momentum in security sector reform also stalled, but the recently formed national commission to combat the proliferation of small arms and light weapons has made considerable progress since its inception in October. On human rights he cites growing concerns among media organs over violations of freedom of the press, with the media coming under increasing criticism from the authorities, who accuse them of abusing press freedoms. “UNOGBIS is pursuing initiatives to provide training in practical skills, ethics and peace issues for journalists, to enable the media to operate more effectively and impartially,” he says.
The campaign represents a global response to the dire humanitarian situation now confronting Africa, where 38 million people currently face starvation. The hunger crisis in Africa has grown particularly acute in the wake of two major, simultaneous emergencies in the past year, WFP said. In southern Africa, almost 15 million people are threatened in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. In Ethiopia and Eritrea, meanwhile, an additional 12 million to 16 million are at risk, where millions more face starvation in Sudan, Angola, the Great Lakes region and West Africa.“To avert mass starvation, we need a massive response by governments, private charities, non-governmental organisations, citizens’ groups and individuals, ordinary citizens,” WFP Deputy Executive Director Jean-Jacque Graisse said in a statement issued from the agency’s headquarters in Rome. The catastrophic conditions are primarily the result of drought, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and, in some countries, political turmoil and failed economic policies. Of particular concern is the new phenomenon of shifting weather patterns causing floods and droughts, which over the past two years have brought the highest number of weather related disasters in a decade. The WFP campaign is one component of a growing global focus on hunger issues in Africa. “Ordinary citizens have a role to play,” Mr. Graisse said. “It’s critical they join the campaign and urge their governments to address the needs of the hungry now before it is too late.”
“Women are key drivers of economic growth and that wealth in the hands of women leads to much more equitable outcomes in terms of the quality of life of families and communities,” the study, entitled State of Women in Cities Report 2012/13, said. “Addressing the barriers to women’s participation in cities creates a situation where women’s potential is more fully realised and households, communities and governments also reap rewards. “It is imperative that women and men should enjoy equal rights and opportunities in cities on moral/ethical, economic and political grounds. This will not only engender women’s well-being but it will increase their individual and collective prosperity as well as the prosperity of the cities in which they reside.”Produced by the Nairobi-based UN Human Settlements Programme, known as UN-HABITAT, which is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all, the report also stressed the need to address unemployment and other disadvantages that hobble urban youth. The report called for policies to enhance gender equality, equity and prosperity of women in cities, noting that cities of the future will comprise a majority female component, especially among people older than 60 and even more so among those older than 80 years. While underscoring the unpaid caring and social activities that women undertake, such as childcare, caring for the sick, disabled and elderly, washing, cleaning and other community services that allow the urban economy to function and prosper, even if this labour is seldom recognised or valued, the report stressed the “crucially important” economic contributions they make through their paid work“The ‘feminization’ of the global labour force tends to be associated with urbanisation, with the related concentration of women in export-manufacturing, the service sector and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT),” it said, adding that women, especially the urban poor, are disadvantaged in terms of equal access to employment, housing, health and education, asset ownership, experiences of urban violence, and ability to exercise their rights. UN-HABITAT’s State of Urban Youth Report 2012/2013 stressed that while the young are “society’s most important and dynamic human resource” – with 1.3 billion between ages 12 and 24, most of them living in urban areas – nearly 45 per cent of them, some 515 million, live on less than $2 a day.It called for better aligning educational and training systems with the current and future needs of young people, so that they cannot only discern developmental issues but may even be capable of suggesting innovative solutions to deep problems of development and growth.“Of paramount importance is access to education and opportunities for acquiring skills,” the study added, stressing that youth inequality in urban life is closely related to unequal opportunities in later life and calling for policies that include investment in economic infrastructure, tax incentives, vocational training schemes and regulations that aim at a more equitable labour market for urban youth.
“This is an opportune moment to define a new era in international development and cooperation – one builds on the successes and shortcomings of more than three decades of internationally agreed development goals, and the Millennium Development Goals in particular,” Lyonpo Damcho Dorji told the General Assembly on the last day of its annual General Debate segment. He said that the post-2015 process must activate real and meaningful change for all countries if it is indeed to be transformative. And for that to happen, the new development agenda “must be anchored on the need for breakthroughs to address the hard ground realities of different countries, especially with regard to capacity and financing for development.”As such, Mr. Dorji continued, a collaborative approach based on an appreciation of the unique circumstances and experience of each country and driven by the desire for true working partnerships among and within countries will be vital.“Such an approach would require changes in our development paradigm, in our very beliefs on the sustainability of the current trajectory of our world and in our behaviour as individuals, which consequently shape our character as a nation and our destiny as an international community of nations,” he said. For a small, least developed and landlocked country like Bhutan, with many indicators below the ideal, “we have to get our development priorities right,” Mr. Dorji said, adding that given his country’s small size and unique circumstances, the lessons Bhutan has learned are not universal but may have relevance for other nations, including its promotion of a home-grown, people-centred development, with people’s welfare and happiness a main objective. Bhutan also promoted good governance, encouraged strong partnerships and encouraged environmental protection.

Fairbanks police fatally shot a man yesterday. FPD spokeswoman Yumi McCulloch said officers were called to a robbery and assault at the Alaska Motel on South Cushman Street. She said a man, later identified as 28-year-old Fairbanks resident James Robert Richards, was reported to have aimed a gun at a woman in a motel room.Listen now“A short time after that, it was late. Officers said a shot was fired,” McCulloch said. “And once the officers got there, they found the suspect leaving the Alaska motel, still armed on foot, so they followed him.”McCulloch said officers repeatedly ordered Richards to drop his gun, but he refused.“The police deployed their tasers, but those were ineffective, and at oe point, the armed suspect grabbed an elderly man waiting at the bus stop and was trying to put him between himself and officers. So, at a last resort, the suspect was fatally shot.”McCulloch said the officer who shot Richards has been placed on administrative leave. His name will be released in 3 days. Acupressure involves applying pressure with fingers, thumbs or a device to specific points on the body. About a third of women experience moderate to severe fatigue – one of the most common long-term effects of breast cancer treatment – up to 10 years after the treatment ends. The findings revealed that acupressure reduced fatigue by 27 per cent to 34 per cent over six weeks. Two-thirds of women who did relaxing acupressure – a certain type of the healing method –showed significant improvements in fatigue levels, measure of sleep quality, such as disrupted sleep and overall quality of life, the researchers said. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“Acupressure is easy to learn and patients can do it themselves. The intervention could be a low-cost option for treating fatigue,” Zick added. In the study, published in the journal JAMA Oncology, the team tested two types of acupressure: relaxing acupressure, used traditionally to treat insomnia and stimulating acupressure, which is used to increase energy. At the end of the trial, both acupressure treatments resulted in significant, sustained improvements in fatigue. However, the relaxing method appeared to cause more significant improvements in fatigue levels of breast cancer patients.
April 7, 2014 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Tuning in: Each Aereo consumer is assigned a copper antenna (above) and DVR in the cloud to record and watch live TV. Chaitanya “Chet” Kanojia has spent the better part of his life dreaming up technologies with the potential to change the TV industry. As a teen in Bhopal, India, he began his entrepreneurial career building bookshelf speakers in his parents’ garage, selling them for less than the price of name-brand gear. He also hatched a never-realized scheme for a primitive video-on-demand system employing VCRs. “I tried to convince my mom to give me the money to start that. Wisely, she said no,” the 43-year-old chuckles.Kanojia drew formative inspiration from computing pioneers like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. “The most attractive part is that they weren’t born into it. They went from two guys in a garage to empires,” he says. “India is a pretty brutal place. There’s a lot of poverty and a lot of feral dogs running around. My father and I would go out for walks, and he would always say, ‘You know, that dog can feed himself. The challenge in life isn’t feeding yourself. What’s important is what you create.'”After earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Bhopal, Kanojia immigrated to the U.S., attaining a master’s degree in computer systems engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. From there he joined Product Genesis, a strategic innovation management services firm spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “That’s where I learned about product development–how you manage the process, how you allocate resources and all sorts of other skills,” Kanojia recalls. That experience proved instrumental when Kanojia founded Navic Networks in 1999. The Waltham, Mass.-based business’s software helped cable companies with issues like spectrum planning and viewer measurement, which aided them in infrastructure management as well as rolling out targeted campaigns. Navic raised roughly $43 million from investors including Pequot Ventures (now FirstMark Capital), Himalaya Capital, Highland Capital Partners and Pilot House Ventures before Microsoft acquired the business in 2008, forking over between $200 million and $300 million, according to reports.Kanojia stayed with Microsoft for just over two years but itched to return to the startup space, eventually discussing the Aereo concept with FirstMark managing director Amish Jani. “I remember the dialogue vividly,” Jani says. “Chet said, ‘I’ve got this idea. I’ve tried to shake it. It’s so crazy, but it’s so elegant, and I think it can be a game-changer.’ We would have backed almost anything he came up with because we thought so highly of him, but we spent a lot of time working through it and basically decided this thing was crazy enough that it just might work.” Working with Joe Lipowski, who became Aereo’s CTO, and a team of software and hardware engineers, Kanojia began designing the remote antenna at the core of his solution, completing a functional prototype in 2011. The team next tackled how to transcode MPEG-2 on ATSC to the H.264 internet video standard at wire speed on a consumer-by-consumer basis, a challenge that stretched another six months. In all, Aereo spent roughly $50 million on R&D, finally becoming commercially available in September 2012.While Aereo engineers toiled away, Kanojia visited every network broadcaster and many cable companies to discuss the venture. “We told them what we intended to do,” he says. “We said, ‘We think we’re right about this stuff. If you’ve got an issue, we should talk about it, and maybe we can come to a resolution.’ Not a single person said, ‘We have a problem with this.'”Kanojia publicly unveiled Aereo in February 2012, buoyed by $20 million in financing from backers including FirstMark, Highland Capital and IAC, the media and internet company led by Hollywood power broker Barry Diller, who spent close to a decade as Fox chairman and CEO. The networks filed their injunction just two weeks later.A source familiar with the case says that broadcasters fear Aereo could undermine the lucrative retransmission fee structure imposed by 1992’s Cable Television Consumer Protection and Competition Act, which requires cable providers to reimburse networks for carrying their content. Retransmission fees generated an estimated $3.3 billion in broadcaster revenue in 2013, a total research firm SNL Kagan projects will increase to $7.6 billion by 2019. The networks don’t just object to Aereo redistributing their programming while circumventing those fees; they believe cable and satellite operators could follow Aereo’s lead, causing a seismic shift that would endanger their bottom line.”In some respects, Aereo actually helps broadcasters,” nScreenMedia’s Dixon counters. “One aspect of their business is advertising sales, and Aereo increases eyeballs. It’s that simple. The problem is that broadcasters are also getting a substantial amount of cash from pay-TV operators. The broadcasters are not scared of Aereo per se; it’s the approach. Because if that approach is OK, then potentially pay-TV operators could say, ‘We’re just going to do Aereo for our local broadcast stations, and we’re not going to pay [the networks] anymore.'”The case now before the Supreme Court, American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. v. Aereo, Inc., isn’t simply about Aereo and its broadcaster opponents. A decision to block Aereo could jeopardize the cloud-computing and cloud-storage segment as a whole, potentially blocking consumers from saving and accessing content via digital locker services like Apple’s iCloud, Amazon Cloud Player and Google Play Music.”People confuse the issue and say, ‘Aereo doesn’t pay for content,'” Kanojia says. “Well, the consumer has the right to that content for free, using an antenna. That’s what Congress said. That was the deal with broadcasters. The cloud [is] the real fight. If you stop Aereo, you’re basically saying that every time you move a file from location A to location B, you have to pay a performance tax on it. This is not limited to performances, either–it also applies to e-books and everything else across the board.”If the Supreme Court rules against Aereo, the justices would effectively overturn the 2008 Cablevision decision and make cloud-based DVRs illegal, “in which case we have to change that architecture and revert back to putting DVRs in people’s homes,” Dixon explains. “Then I start to really worry about cloud storage for consumers. The ability for me to rip a CD, put that content on a cloud-storage device and listen to it on my iPad or smartphone when I’m wandering around–that behavior may be in question.”And if the Supreme Court rules in Aereo’s favor? 21st Century Fox president and COO Chase Carey will consider transitioning Fox to a subscription service, and other networks could follow suit. Dixon says that scenario would likely take a long time to play out, however, citing a multitude of contractual hurdles.”Maybe nothing happens,” Dixon adds. “One of the broadcasters’ fears is that pay-TV systems will use Aereo’s structure to avoid paying them license fees. The problem with that scenario for pay-TV providers is that NBC, CBS and Fox provide a lot of additional cable channels for those systems as well. They could say, ‘Be careful–if you do this, I’m going to pull all of my channels from your service.'” (This is not an idle threat: Time Warner Cable lost a record 306,000 subscribers in the third quarter of 2013 following a monthlong skirmish that blacked out CBS and CBS-owned cable outlets Showtime, the Smithsonian Channel and CBS Sports.)Only the Supreme Court knows what comes next. For now, Aereo must play the waiting game. The company plans to expand to additional U.S. markets by the end of 2014; Kanojia is also plotting new features and enhancements. While Aereo has not yet revealed subscriber totals or revenue, investors remain bullish on the company’s prospects: In early January the firm closed a Series C financing round of $34 million, bringing its total funding to close to $100 million.Kanojia says he can’t–scratch that, won’t–envision a scenario in which Aereo does not prevail. “I wouldn’t get out of bed if I was thinking along those lines,” he says. “Consumers want this, the system will be better, and we are bringing innovation into the industry. We’re on the side of the angels.” The ratings are in. Americans love TV–and they hate their cable providers with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. Gripes ranging from annual price hikes to technical snafus to restrictive bundled packages continue to relegate cable companies to the cellar of consumer experience surveys: In a study by research firm Temkin Group that ranks the customer service of 235 companies in 19 industries, TV service providers occupy six of the seven bottom spots.Chet Kanojia feels subscribers’ pain. “Media consumption is changing and evolving, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of technological progress and innovation around the cable customer experience and around billing,” he says. “Consumers feel like they’re still stuck in an era where they’re not being heard.”Aereo, the startup Kanojia launched in 2012 in New York City, turns the conventional broadcast model on its head by enabling consumers to stream live and time-shifted TV programs to internet-connected devices–no boxes, cable subscriptions or complex wires required. The firm assigns each user a dime-size remote antenna and cloud-based digital video recorder, billing $8 per month for 20 hours of DVR space. For an additional $4 per month, Aereo customers can upgrade to 60 hours of space and the flexibility of recording two shows at once.”Our ambition as a company is offering a better way for people to consume television and media,” says the soft-spoken Kanojia, Aereo’s CEO. “We’re getting a lot of positive reaction because we’re enabling an alternative. There is a vacuum in the marketplace that the incumbents aren’t coming in to serve.”As of press time, Aereo services were limited to a dozen major U.S. cities, with grab-bag programming lineups determined by which signals are available in each market. But despite Aereo’s relatively small scale, major broadcasters are mounting an all-out offensive to neutralize the threat it poses. Almost immediately after Aereo went live, a consortium of TV giants filed an injunction against the service, including CBS, Disney’s ABC, Fox and NBC, whose parent Comcast will have even more skin in the game if its bid to acquire Time Warner Cable is successful. The networks contend that Aereo, which doesn’t pay for the over-the-air broadcast signals its solution captures, violates copyright law and essentially steals their programming. (The broadcasters declined to comment on the recommendation of counsel.)Aereo is winning the battle, at least so far. In mid-2012, a U.S. District Judge denied the networks’ joint injunction, citing as precedent the landmark 2008 case The Cartoon Network v. CSC Holdings, Inc. (aka Cablevision), which determined the legality of cloud-based streaming and DVR-based services. The networks appealed the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which in April 2013 upheld the lower court’s ruling and stated that Aereo’s one-to-one streaming technology is not tantamount to a public performance and therefore does not constitute copyright infringement.Last October, the broadcasters petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case. One month later, both the National Football League and Major League Baseball filed a joint amicus brief in support of their broadcasting partners, with the two leagues even threatening to shift their games from free TV to premium cable, “where Aereo-like services cannot hijack and exploit their programming without authorization.” The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case; a ruling is expected by the end of June.”I’m not an attorney, but I can tell you that Aereo has gone to extraordinary lengths to craft a service that, to my eyes, stays within the law and what is decided fair use,” says Colin Dixon, principal analyst at Silicon Valley analysis firm nScreenMedia. “This is a very, very important case, because if the justices find [that Aereo’s streaming service] is a broadcast, it calls into question the Cablevision decision. It will also call into question other cloud services, as well as all infrastructure for delivery of all media over the internet.” This story appears in the April 2014 issue of . WASHINGTON (AP) — The US economy should get better after a sputtering first quarter, but how much better? It’s complicated.Steady hiring and low gas prices should help power solid growth through the rest of 2015. The harsh winter and a labor dispute that slowed trade at West Coast ports are both over. Home sales and construction are rebounding, along with business investment. But risks remain: A stronger dollar will likely continue to keep the trade deficit wide. And further cutbacks in oil drilling could depress spending in the energy industry. Four benefits of having a wireless security system Ex-FBI agent details raid on Phoenix body donation facility Here are three reasons the economy is likely to post solid grow this year, followed by three reasons growth might disappoint.CONSUMER REBOUNDWhile the overall economy went into reverse, the labor market has been steaming ahead. The U.S. added 223,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.4 percent — the lowest level since the fall of 2008.Theoretically, more people working means more income to spend. Economists are forecasting that the modest 1.8 percent growth in consumer spending in the first quarter will climb. And since consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of overall activity, the acceleration will lift economic growth back into positive territory.Analysts project the overall economy to grow at an annual pace of around 2.5 percent in the second quarter and rev up to 3 percent in the second half of the year.TEMPORARY SOFT PATCHEconomists believe a lot of the bad things that happened in the first quarter are fleeting. The Northeast has emerged from the frigid cold and record amounts of snow that hit the region in the first quarter. The winter blizzards that curtailed trips to the mall and auto dealerships could even lead to a surge in pent-up demand in coming months. While gas prices have risen recently, they are still about $1 below the levels of a year ago. Economists believe these continued savings will spur stronger consumer spending in the months ahead. If they are wrong, then the expected growth in consumer spending may be modest.UNWANTED SURPRISESThe economy has muddled through with sub-par growth averaging just 2.2 percent since the recession ended in June 2009. Economists have repeatedly forecast that the economy was on the verge of breaking out to faster growth above 3 percent, only to be disappointed. When this year started, they were predicted 2015 would be the strongest in a decade, topping the 3.3 percent growth of 2005. However, with the surprisingly weak start to the year, they have scaled back those estimates. There could be more unwelcome surprises. One of the biggest could be volatility in financial markets once the Federal Reserve starts raising interest rates. It has kept a key rate near zero since late 2008.At the moment, rate hikes are expected to begin in September. While the central bank has done a lot to prepare markets, there could be a possible repeat of the 2013 “taper tantrum,” which sent markets tumbling for a time. Turbulent markets might then undermine consumer and business confidence and push growth lower. Copyright © The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Don Shooter shows health improvement The widening deficit is a reflection of the dollar’s increase in value against other major currencies since last year. The stronger dollar hurts U.S. exports by making American-made goods more expensive in overseas markets. It also increases the competition domestic producers face from foreign-made goods by making imports cheaper for American consumers. It was a surge in imports that played the biggest role in widening the trade deficit in the first quarter. Economists believe the drag from the trade deficit will ease in coming months. But if they are wrong, that could mean their forecasts of a rebound will turn out to be overly optimistic.ENERGY BUSTThe big drop in oil prices since last year was supposed to be a net positive for the U.S. economy. But so far, the economy has felt more pain than gain.Energy companies have slashed their spending on drilling activity, pushing it down by 48.6 percent in the first quarter — the sharpest fall since the depths of the 2007-2009 recession. While drilling rig counts are still dropping, economists hope that the drag from these cutbacks will begin to lessen.Analysts are also hopeful that the gains they have been forecasting in consumer spending will start to emerge. They have been puzzled that consumers so far have chosen to bank their savings from lower gas bills rather than spend the money. A labor dispute that disrupted shipping at many West Coast ports has been resolved, which should alleviate supply bottlenecks that depressed manufacturing activity.Economists also believe they are seeing signs that business investment is starting to rise after falling for a number of months. Gains in housing construction and sales are also fueling hopes.SEASONAL ADJUSTMENTSThe GDP decline in the first quarter this year followed a similar decline last year. In fact, since the country pulled out of the Great Recession in 2009, there have been three quarters when GDP has gone negative — all in the first quarter. That has raised questions about whether the government is having trouble seasonally adjusting activity in the winter and is over-stating first quarter weakness. The Bureau of Economic Analysis, which prepares the GDP, has agreed to look into the issue and says it may adjust the figures later this year.Any gains would make the start of this year look better and mean the economy had less of a hole to climb out of going forward.STRONGER DOLLARA bigger-than-expected trade deficit was a key reason that the GDP was revised from a tiny 0.2 percent gain to the 0.7 percent decline. January 15, 2017 660 Views The most recent New Construction Report from HUD and the Census Bureau was largely disappointing, with starts and permits both taking a step back.New construction has been cited by many analysts as a key to improving the ongoing shortage of available homes for sale. Will starts and permits pick up in December’s report? The industry will find out when the report is released on Thursday, January 19.Housing starts declined by 19 percent over-the-year in the report covering November, down to an annual rate of 1.09 million. Permits did not fare much better, falling by 6.6 over-the-year down to an annual rate of 1.2 million. Completions had a good month, rising by 25 percent over-the-year in November up to a rate of 1.22 million. The decline in starts may have simply been a return to the norm, according to one economist.“(October’s) construction report confirmed just how disappointing new construction has been this year,” realtor.com Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke said. “The seasonally adjusted rate of starts in November was down a whopping 19 percent from October, a much greater drop than anticipated. But the 26 percent increase in October was really an aberration, and can be attributed to factors such as mild weather and the 33-percent rise in multifamily starts.”Presidential Inauguration, Friday, January 20After two months of transition following November’s presidential election, Donald J. Trump is scheduled to be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on Friday, January 20.The housing industry has been following the transition closely. Trump has promised to roll back regulation for the housing industry. At the National Association of Home Builders’ 2016 Midyear Board Meeting in Miami last August, Trump said, “Overregulation, which is a big problem, is costing our economy 2 trillion dollars a year. Think of that. And you are a big beneficiary of overregulation, because there’s nobody other than, I would say, the energy industry, that is overregulated more than the home building industry. Nobody.”Trump’s pick for HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson, testified before the Senate Banking Committee last week. Carson told the Committee, “Throughout my life, I have done things that many deemed impossible. I pledge to work with this Committee and the dedicated career staff at HUD to solve difficult, seemingly obstinate issues and address the needs of those who rely on the services provided by HUD.”Steve Mnuchin, Trump’s choice for Treasury Secretary, has also promised to cut back regulations for the financial industry, particular in regard to the Dodd-Frank Act, which passed in 2010 and is considered by the Obama Administration to be one of its greatest achievements. Rumors have swirled around possible reform to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; citing Trump spokesperson Sean Spicer, the Huffington Post reported that Trump interviewed former U.S. Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) for the position of CFPB Director. Related NewsMullenkolly Wayanad – As you travel through Wayanad in Kerala you would wonder whether there is indeed a drought at all The region is all green and temperature is comparatively lower too But that is only until you reach Kolavally in Mullenkolly Gram Panchayat near the Karnataka border where villagers are reeling under a severe water crisis and the Kabani river their life-line is fast drying “There is no water Neither for us nor for our cattle Our cattle have nothing to eat just the mud” says Sarasu a resident of the Ambedkar colony about 30 km from Mullenkolly The residents here were primarily pepper and coffee farmers But with the crisis in the agriculture sector deepening most of them have taken to cattle rearing Now with the drought even that is under threat The Kabani river in Wayanad that has dried up The Kabani river originates in the Wayanad district and flows to the east through Karnataka The remote colony from where residents walk around three kilometres to catch a bus was fully dependent on the muddied almost stagnant untidy water in the river for nearly one-and-half months as the street-side taps that provide clean drinking water dried up The crisis came to light when a few officials from the Kerala Forest Research Institute visited the area and brought their plight to the authorities’ attention Now two tankers come to the area once in a week or two and the taps too have water intermittently To be sure the situation in Wayand is much better than regions like Marathwada in Maharashtra But what makes the drought here particularly scary is that the region has always been green and water has never been a problem This is the first time something like this is happening here The villagers are shocked to see the change They never expected their fields would ever dry up and develop cracks that their river which always flowed in abundance would ever be so thin Wayanad has always been a resource-rich area covered with forest and thousands of streams and springs The weather and the soil of the region were totally different from the rest of Kerala and conducive for cultivation of paddy and spices such as pepper While agriculture has been the mainstay of the indigenous tribes tourism has flourished in the recent years “It was climate that made Wayanad There was a time when it rained always But it is not so now” says Klapetta Narayanan a political thinker and poet who was born in the region and has seen the region deteriorating slowly The disaster has been in the making for the last many years say activists and experts TV Sajeev scientist Kerala Forest Research Institute terms the drought in Wayanad a man-made disaster and does not link it to the global warming According to PU Das district soil conservation officer it all started with the large-scale migration into the region from south Kerala towards the end of 1940s which resulted in a change in cropping pattern and encroachments into the forest The forest cover in the district has been fast depleting A study titled Geospatial assessment and monitoring of historical forest cover changes (1920–2012) in Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that assessed forest depletion in seven protected areas Wayanad-I Wildlife Sanctuary experienced the most forest cover loss The study conducted by Forestry & Ecology Groupof theNational Remote Sensing CentrewithISRO and Department of Environmental Sciences of the Andhra University found that in 1920 the forest cover of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was 3183 sq km In 1973 this had declined to 1726 sq km that is a decrease of 54 percent The villagers never thought their fields would ever dry up and develop cracks Leneesh K who works with Thanal an NGO engaged in the area of agriculture and sustainable living says the destruction of forest has in turn resulted in a decline in the canopy “So once the rain stops the top soil doesn’t have the ability to retain the moisture” he says According to Das earlier the rainfall in the region used to be 3000 mm Of this 60 percent or 96 tmc of water flowed out of the Kabani river The balance 40 percent used to get retained in water bodies and infiltrated in the soil But now it is estimated that 145 tmc of water flows out “That means 90 percent of the rain that we get flows out Only 10 percent gets absorbed in the soil” Das says What this also means is that soil erosion is at an alarming 20 tonnes per hectare per year The various factors that impact soil erosion is water run-off slope canopy coverage land use agriculture pattern soil texture and top soil depth The settlers who came from other regions changed the cropping pattern and methods of cultivation in the region There has been a major shift to cash crops and mono crops which are not suitable for the environmental and soil health of Wayanad From paddy that started in the 1950s to pepper and coffee towards the 80s and then to rubber and plantain towards 90s there has been major shift in the agriculture patterns “Other than paddy whatever else you plant in the field will have a negative impact on the ground water recharging With the cropping pattern change this recharging is not taking place now” says Leneesh Apart from this the boom in construction and tourism has given rise to large-scale quarrying in the area “Most of the quarries go deeper than the ground water level This results in flooding of the quarry where water from nearby springs get accumulated What this means is less water in the adjoining areas” says Sajeev of KFRI As election draws near there is a scramble to address the situation and find solutions But the ignorance of most of the political parties about the root cause of the crisis is palpable At a water conservation workshop conducted by the press club at Pulpally (Mullenkolly is about 4 km away from here) as expert Sajeev started his speech UDF MLA IC Balakrishnan who is a candidate from the Sulthan Bathery constituency this time too left the stage Probably he is tied up with election work But that he left the dais before the workshop began was ominous It is the political class who should be made aware of the situation because the solutions being suggested now are short sighted “The solutions that are being proposed now like constructing check dams etc will only deepen the crisis” Sajeev reminded at the workshop “Such short-term solutions will boomerang They are sure to backfire” he said “The root cause for the depletion in water resources is never addressed” concurs Leneesh (not at the workshop) Coffee plants dried and burnt in Wayanad As a first step according to Sajeev restrictions should be put in place on quarrying “It is ironical that whatever money being earmarked to address environmental damage is channelled into construction work like that of tanks or pipelines” he notes The reason according to him is that construction is a sector where corruption is standardised It is easy for the political class and construction lobby to engage each other Secondly the plantations of teak wood acacia etc should be turned into natural forest to increase the canopy CK Janu a tribal leader who has lead the Adivasi struggle for land and now an NDA candidate from the Sulthan Bathery constituency seeks a Wayanad package from the government for the farmers in the region She says the only way out is to reverse the cropping pattern and methods of cultivation to the traditional system “The Wayanad package should address the financial difficulties of the farmers who are still struggling to retain the traditional methods of cultivation” she says True The story of Cheruvayal Raman (fondly called Ramettan) who is engaged in cultivation for the last 56 years and incurs huge losses only to preserve the traditional seeds and methods of cultivation stands testimony to this As one speaks to experts one thing becomes clearer – it is the change in land use pattern that has resulted in the degeneration of the region Closely linked to this issue is the alienation of the Adivasi land their culture and their knowledge about the soil and climate of Wayanad It is high time various political parties who have for years conspired to keep the Adivasis out of the mainstream political discourse recognised their struggle for land self-rule and political representation That will be the first step towards Wayanad getting its abundance back Remember climate change has only begun to bite On Monday? the government has announced a composition scheme. 75 lakhs and has opted for composition scheme then he will have
