Highlights from the best brand categories at the World Dairy Innovation Awards

first_imgHighlights from the best brand categories at the World Dairy Innovation AwardsPosted By: News Deskon: June 21, 2017In: Awards, Beverage, Business, Dairy, Environment, Food, IndustriesPrintEmailThe best brand categories at the World Dairy Innovation Awards 2017 give us a picture of the emerging names and new players in the global dairy industry.Whether that’s the hottest new brands and businesses, the best brand extensions or marketing campaigns, or even the most environmentally friendly and socially conscious companies in the market – these categories really can tell us a lot. This year’s World Dairy Innovation Awards considered a host of innovation – entries from over 20 countries in 19 different categories.FoodBev Media marketing director Isabel Sturgess said: “This is the eleventh annual World Dairy Innovation Awards, and once again we are fascinated by the level of innovation that is shown within the entries. We see new flavours, new concepts, clever packaging, state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and new ground gained towards a more responsible and sustainable dairy industry.”The crown for best new brand or business went to the French dairy producer En Direct Des Èleveurs, which was commended for its choice of Ecolean pouches for its sustainable and traceable milk. The pouch also won acclaim in the best packaging design category.En Direct Des Èleveurs consists of 14 dairy farmers, with new producers continually joining the initiative. The set-up allows it to deliver products from the producer to the consumer in a direct chain, as well as providing support to the local community and supplying traceable and environmentally friendly dairy products to consumers. The dairy company had to fight off competition in the category from Nanyang Polytechnic, for its moringa and carrot milk spread, as well as Dairy Farmers of America. In the best brand extension category, YogOaty Yogurts from Shaken Udder Milkshakes came out on top. It offers a range of yogurt smoothies made from yogurt, oats and fruit and served in squeezable pouches. It’s the latest launch from Shaken Udder, which already produces a host of dairy milkshakes in several different formats.BiPro Protein Water from Agropur/BioPro; Cracker Cuts from Dutch Farms; and Kerrygold Yoghurt from Ornua rounded off the category. The best new brand or marketing activation, which celebrates the year’s most effective means of communicating with consumers, was taken by the Solid Stuff campaign from Quebec Dairy Farmers in collaboration with Lg2. Solid Stuff uses the fictional character Popeye to reinforce the nutritional value of dairy milk in a bright and fun consumer awareness bid. Finally, there were two categories celebrating the industry’s commitment to social and environmental sustainability.DairyPod Cogen from WoodCo Energy Ireland – a new way of heating water in a dairy plant – was the winner of the best environmental sustainability category. The Lake District Biogas Bio-energy Plant from Clearfleau was also a finalist here. And in the best CSR report or initiative category, Dairy Farmers of America was commended for its DFA CSR report, which outlined how the company had met its goals on environmental stewardship, milk safety and quality, employee training, and animal care and wellness.Solid Stuff – the campaign from Quebec Dairy Farmers & Lg2 – can continue its celebrations after being named a finalist in this category.Share with your network: Tags: sustainabilityWorld Dairy Innovation Awardslast_img read more

Reaction UK industry responds to minimum unit alcohol pricing

first_imgReaction: UK industry responds to minimum unit alcohol pricingPosted By: News Deskon: November 15, 2017In: Alcohol, Beverage, Business, Industries, Interesting ListsPrintEmail Karen Betts Scotch Whisky Association “Looking ahead, the Scotch whisky industry will continue to work in partnership with the government and the voluntary sector to promote responsible drinking and to tackle alcohol-related harm.“We will now look to the Scottish and UK governments to support the industry against the negative effects of trade barriers being raised in overseas markets that discriminate against Scotch whisky as a consequence of minimum pricing, and to argue for fair competition on our behalf.“This is vital in order that the jobs and investment the industry provides in Scotland are not damaged. At home, we hope to see an objective assessment of the impact of MUP.” “This is a historic and far-reaching judgement and a landmark moment in our ambition to turn around Scotland’s troubled relationship with alcohol.“In a ruling of global significance, the UK Supreme Court has unanimously backed our pioneering and life-saving alcohol pricing policy.“Given the clear and proven link between consumption and harm, minimum pricing is the most effective and efficient way to tackle the cheap, high strength alcohol that causes so much damage to so many families.” Shona Robison MSPScottish health secretary Paul WatersonScottish Licensed Trade Association “My association has been arguing for price controls on alcohol since retail price maintenance on alcohol was abolished in the late 1960s. So today is the end of a long journey for us. Needless to say we are delighted that this positive decision has finally been reached.“Alcohol consumption in the UK has more than doubled over the last 40 years. As consumption has increased, so has alcohol-related harm. The consequences of this abuse affects all of us, and costs society more than £2 billion a year.“The relationship between low prices and increased consumption is obvious. Supermarkets’ strategy of using alcohol as a loss leader, very often charging prices cheaper than water, which is totally irresponsible, is a major factor in causing much of the alcohol abuse we see in Scotland today.“Minimum pricing will be a major element in eradicating these problems.” “We accept the UK Supreme Court’s ruling on minimum unit pricing in Scotland. The WSTA remains committed to working with the Scottish government – and all UK governments – on policies that have already proved effective, like partnership solutions that are locally targeted, promote alcohol education and better enforce existing regulations.“We look to the Scottish government to provide clarity to businesses on how minimum unit pricing will be implemented and to give them sufficient time to do so as efficiently as possible. Equally, MUP’s impact on businesses and on all consumers must be rigorously and objectively monitored and evaluated over time.” “It’s no surprise the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal by the Scottish Whisky Association. The tobacco companies couldn’t stop plain packaging and it will be difficult for any entity to challenge laws aimed at improving the health of consumers. Minimum alcohol pricing is just one of a number of measures the Scottish government is looking at to improve the health of people in Scotland. It recently confirmed it intends to restrict price promotions on food high in sugar, salt or fat so the Supreme Court dismissing the appeal coincides with the Scottish government’s own action on health quite nicely. Only time will tell whether the new law will reduce the 12% of binge drinkers in Scotland, which is the intention.” Mark JonesLaw firm Gordon’scenter_img Miles BealeWine & Spirits Trade Association A challenge to the Scottish government’s plans to introduce minimum unit pricing (MUP) for alcoholic drinks has failed in the UK’s Supreme Court, paving the way for more effective regulation of cheap and high-strength alcohol. It means that a minimum price – proposed at £0.50 per unit – will be enforced on alcoholic drinks in Scotland. At this level, a bottle of high-strength cider like Frosty Jack’s could not be legally sold for less than £3.75 per litre, while a Scottish lager such as Tennent’s would be £2.05 per litre.FoodBev has rounded up some of the key responses to this morning’s ruling, which effectively dismisses objections raised by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA). “C&C Group has been a strong and vocal supporter of minimum unit pricing since it was first proposed in 2011. We welcome today’s landmark decision. It is the right move to make: a progressive step forward in tackling the problems of alcohol misuse in Scotland and we congratulate the Scottish government on its perseverance.“Although the majority of Scots enjoy alcohol responsibly, we are concerned about the availability of strong, cheap alcohol and its correlation with harmful drinking that causes misery across Scotland. As part of a package of measures, minimum unit pricing will help to address this.“Now that the Supreme Court have made their ruling, we urge the industry to get behind the decision. We’ll be working with the Scottish government and our customers over the coming months to support the successful introduction of minimum unit pricing. Moreover, we also hope similar legislation can be realised across other territories we operate in, including Ireland and Northern Ireland.” Paul BartlettC&C Group Share with your network: Tags: AlcoholUKlast_img read more

World Dairy Innovation Awards what are the judges looking for

first_imgMarcin HydzikPresident, Board of the Association of Polish Dairy ProcessorsThe topic of evaluating innovation is quite complex. For example, we can find a lot of products on the market whose innovation features might be questionable. Sometimes the label of ‘innovative product’ is often just a marketing trick. We are all aware of the fact that manufacturers do not introduce innovative products on a daily basis due to the high risk involved. However, for this reason alone, it is worth searching for and rewarding those entrepreneurs who were able to bring true innovation to the market. The features I would like to take into account when evaluating entries for World Dairy Innovation Awards 2018 are as follows:whether innovation provides added value to the consumerwhether it is true innovation, not just a copy of a competitor’s ideaspackaging – the impact on environment, additional features to facilitate use, durability, convenience, aestheticslabelling – the way producer communicates with consumershealth-related benefits of the product – impact on customers’ lifestyle or nutrition habitsproduct’s potential in reaching new, more individualised groups of consumersinnovative production methods – including environmental footprint, energy efficiencyproduct components – quality (for example GMO-free), methods of obtaining (including organic farming), quantity and type of ingredientswhether and how the product responds to emerging market trends, such as decreasing number of people in households, eating out becoming more frequent, changing of society’s age structure, growing consumer awareness, changing of nutrition habits, and so on.I hope that all these factors will significantly help us to choose the best innovative dairy product in 2018. Andrew IvePartner and managing director, Food-X Liz WhitleyExecutive director, The Society of Dairy Technology I have been a dairy technologist all of my working life and in that time dairy products have been in and out of fashion nutritionally. Nutritionists and dieticians are now realising just how important dairy is to good health. In my opinion innovations in dairy should reflect the health benefits of dairy products and therefore should not damage this by having ingredients that are perceived to be unhealthy. There are real data showing that the move away from dairy by young people is having a negative effect on their health and I am hoping to see innovations that draw this group back to dairy. My five main criteria when judging are:Does the product have appeal for the target market? It is fine to design a product that you like, but if no-one else buys it, it just isn’t going to succeed. Will the innovation encourage customers to try the product?Does the packaging reflect the image of the product? If you are designing a product with a healthy image, don’t over-package it as customers are getting much more aware of the damage that packaging can do to the environment.Remember that it isn’t necessarily the quirky product that will last in the market. Products that have longevity are the real winners, so don’t try to create the square wheel as the round one has been shown to be the real winner. Finally, make sure that your product will do what it says it will! Good luck.Click here to view Liz’s LinkedIn profile Seeing the best and brightest on the World Dairy Innovation Award stage will be one of this year’s high points. Being one of the first to see the new emerging brands which will help shape the dairy product landscape is a real honour. As a judge, I’ll be looking for the same things we look for from our applicants at Food-X, specifically companies with:A big idea – How they’ll make their chosen category better and more relevant for consumers. A big idea which, if they manage to realise it, will make them one of the leaders in their category over the next decade.A vision – Seeing a gap or opportunity in the market, a strong affinity to where consumers are moving. Not duplicating or mimicking other brands and products but being prepared to lead.A clean execution – A simple, clean execution of the idea or vision so that it’s instantly apparent how the product meets its consumers’ needs and desires. A great team – A team who can pull off the full potential of the brand and products being built and realise its place in the market.I’m really looking forward to seeing the applicants and finalists for the World Dairy Innovation Awards for 2018.Click here to view Andrew’s LinkedIn profile Yumiko Magara WilkeySenior insight manager, Zenith GlobalI am excited to be sitting in the judging panel of the World Dairy Innovation Awards once again this year, and very much look forward to seeing the latest dairy product innovations.I am particularly interested in the originality and simplicity of the product’s concept. There are so many new products launched and yet some are more interesting than others. Personally it is often the first impression that counts when it comes to spotting a new product in store. It does not have to be distinctively different but yet does it have that ‘it’ factor which stands out from the rest? Also, is the product’s concept communicated clearly and simply? Increasingly more consumers are influenced by the brand story behind the product.Secondly, the health and wellness trend has had a great impact on the food and beverage industry and dairy is not an exception. Consumers are now educating themselves via social media on functional ingredients and how best to incorporate them into their lives. Therefore I will be looking at how well the product is responding to these consumer needs, and in what ways.Next, authenticity and transparency of the product. Consumers today are becoming more interested in the ethical practices of manufacturers. Buying from ethically savvy companies automatically gives the ‘conscious’ consumer a feel-good factor to be part of it and this is increasingly becoming an important part of buying.Lastly, the use of social media has become so powerful today. It now takes a lot more than just on-pack messages to grab consumers’ attention and I would be interested to learn various styles of marketing for the latest dairy innovations.Click here to view Yumiko’s LinkedIn profile In this second of two parts, we ask four more judges in the World Dairy Innovation Awards – to be held in Warsaw, Poland – what they are hoping to see from entries.Hopefully their responses will act as a useful guide for your application and inspire you to enter, showcasing your latest R&D achievements in front of an audience of industry professionals at the Global Dairy Congress this June.To find out more about the World Dairy Innovation Awards, including how to enter and what benefits entrants receive, please click here. Axwater rebranding pays off as the range gains traction

first_imgAx-water re-branding pays off as the range gains tractionPosted By: Harriet Jachecon: September 13, 2018In: Beverage, Marketing, Soft drinks, WaterPrintEmailAfter less than six months into its launch, ax water, a line of berry-infused waters, has re-branded in order to respond to consumer feedback. This move has successfully paid off as the line is now being distributed nationally across the US by large beverage companies including United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI), KeHE Distributors, LLC, Bills Distribution, Braun Distribution, and Beverage Wholesalers. Moves have also been made to build ax waters’ promotional calendar, which encompasses collaborating with influencers to get the word out about the range. The beverage line will appeal to health and wellness consumers: the brand claims it is high in antioxidants and low in calories. The functional beverage is infused with Ariona berry, which ax water says holds multiple benefits for cardiac, digestive, and inflammatory conditions. Blake Johnson, the chief executive officer of the company, said: “One thing we have done from the start is listen to feedback from our customers. We aren’t playing in a new industry, but we are here to disrupt it. The product was speaking to our customers, but the packaging wasn’t, so we shifted course and the response has been epic.”Share with your network: Tags: ax waterUSlast_img read more

PureCycle partners with Nestlé Milliken for plastic recycling

Nestlé is working with the company to develop new packaging materials that help avoid plastic waste, in line with its own commitment to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.According to PureCycle, about 20% of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly used to make plastic bottles, is recycled. By contrast, less than 1% of polypropylene plastic is currently recycled. The firm is focusing on recycling polypropylene to make products such as food and beverage packaging, automobile interiors, electronics, and home furnishingsWith technology licensed from P&G, PureCycle is building a new plant in Lawrence County, Ohio, that will recycle 119 million pounds of polypropylene, producing over 105 million pounds per year starting in 2021.“These partners are helping us accelerate as we bring this solution to the market,” said Mike Otworth, CEO of PureCycle Technologies. “This is a validation of our method, and it will help us continue to move even more quickly as we make plastics recycling a reality.”He added: “The use of Milliken’s additives will help to ensure that PureCycle’s Ultra Pure Recycled Polypropylene (UPRP) is of the highest quality and adds the maximum value to brand owners and consumers. We believe that this partnership will further differentiate PureCycle as both a leading reclaimer and producer of polypropylene.”Halsey Cook, president and CEO of Milliken & Company, said: “Milliken understands that creating a sustainable future requires meaningful collaboration with other industry pioneers.“We believe PureCycle’s technology combined with Milliken’s leading plastic additives provide a transformative opportunity to elevate the viability of recycled polypropylene and help solve the plastics end-of-life challenge.”Earlier this year, Nestlé partnered with Danimer Scientific, a developer and manufacturer of biodegradable plastic products, to create new biodegradable water bottles.Share with your network: Tags: MillikenNestléPureCycle TechnologiessustainabilityUSlast_img read more

Post-Labor Day, however, only 250,000 residents call Cape Cod home, and it becomes one of the country’s most addicted stretches of coastline. Amid a national opioid epidemic, Massachusetts is designated as one of the top 10 states in the US with the highest rate of opiate addiction. Shares152152 Pinterest Treating pain without addiction: inside the lab fighting the opioid crisis Like Cape Cod’s economy, addiction can be seasonal. In the summer, the temptation, for some, to get high in a vacant beach parking lot or a rest stop bathroom can be easier to resist with the influx of jobs and tourists to keep addicts busy or unnoticed. But during the long winter months, the desire to stay sober or to seek treatment wanes, particularly for women who, unlike men, have fewer recovery resources available to them. Instead, women are often forced into sobriety when serving time in prison for being convicted of drug-related crimes. Upon their release, especially during the winter, many struggle to stay clean. Melissa Peace, though, has weathered the pressures that many who struggle with addiction here face. Peace came to Cape Cod in January 2010, newly sober and on parole. She secured a bed in an unmarked house, hidden behind pine trees and sand. This house is one of the only residential treatment programs for women in the area. And Peace has not left Cape Cod since.“I’ll never forget that day. It was 10 January 2010,” says Peace. She has a tiny dog named Prince who jumps into her lap whenever she sits down. “We got to the house and had a little bit of a meltdown. Share on WhatsApp Trump Backs Away from Attempt to Add Citizenship Question to 2020 CensusPresident Trump backed away from an attempt to force a question about US citizenship onto the US census, announcing in a press conference that he was instead directing federal agencies to share government records in order to assemble an estimate of the number of citizens and non-citizens living in the United States. The announcement comes weeks after the supreme court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to add a question about citizenship to the United States’ once-a-decade count of all residents, a move that civil rights groups and the Census Bureau’s own research suggested would lead to an undercount of immigrants of color. Civil rights advocates greeted Trump’s announcement of the alternate data collection effort as a victory. “It’s over. We won,” Dale Ho, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Voting Rights Project, wrote on Twitter. Both Trump and Attorney General William Barr called the decision a logistical one, saying that there was simply not enough time to resolve the lawsuits over adding a citizenship question to the census itself.Trump had previously pledged to use his executive power to find a new way to ask the citizenship question, raising concerns that he might try to defy or work around the supreme court’s ruling. Speaking after the president, the attorney general insisted that concerns that the President would defy the court and print the citizenship question by “executive fiat” were nothing but “rank speculation.”In a ruling last month, the supreme court upheld a lower court decision against Trump, saying that the commerce department’s stated rationale for adding the citizenship question – to protect voting rights – “seems to have been contrived” and was a “distraction”.Citing the US Census Bureau’s own research, plaintiffs in the case had argued that the unprecedented inclusion of such a question was likely to lead to a significant undercount in the American population. Such an undercount, which would mostly affect minority immigrant communities, could benefit Republicans at the ballot box, according to political research unearthed during the case.Updatedat 5.59pm EDT 12 Jul 201917:50Trump Backs Away from Attempt to Add Citizenship Question to 2020 Census Facebook Share on Twitter 12 Jul 201918:58 Twitter Share on Twitter Facebook 12 Jul 201918:09 Twitter Share on Pinterest Share on Messenger 12 Jul 201914:12Federal court allows Trump administration to impose abortion “gag rule” Twitter 12 Jul 201917:50 12 Jul 201918:03 Updatedat 6.59pm EDT Facebook Facebook Share on LinkedIn Updatedat 7.15pm EDT David Shepardson (@davidshepardson).@TheJusticeDept officially says it is throwing in the towel on Census question pic.twitter.com/iAHpeklZIkJuly 11, 2019 Jonathan Swan (@jonathanvswan)Conservatives who’ve been pushing this, including senior admin officials, are stunned at President Trump’s cave on the citizenship question. https://t.co/vriDxQ66aTJuly 11, 2019 Donald Trump “After losing in the highest court in the land last month, President Trump’s executive order is nothing more than flailing in defeat. Can You Guess a Song by Its Word Cloud

first_imgFigure 1. “Guess the Song” game. Can you recognize any of the songs used to generate these word clouds?Any ideas yet? How many have you identified so far for sure? How many have you got an idea about, but you are not yet completely sure? The game actually runs on a web browser. A number of 10 songs are randomly extracted from a list. The text for each extracted song is read, processed, parsed into words, and the corresponding word cloud is generated. One song at a time. The webpage then displays the word cloud and a text box where you are supposed to write the song title if you know it (Figure 1). You have up to three tries to guess the song, after which this attempt turns into a failure.Either with success or failure, once the time for one song is up, the game moves to the next song. And so on until all 10 songs have been shown. The last page of the application produces a rough summary of your attempts, with percentages of success vs. failures. Figure 2. The final page for the “Guess the Song” game. Here you can see the percentages of your failures and successes. The Application Behind the GameWhile you take your time to think, I will show you the application running behind this little game.KNIME Analytics PlatformThis application — for the creation of word clouds from song texts and the collection of answers from users — was developed with the KNIME Analytics Platform.KNIME Analytics Platform is open-source software for Data Science, covering all your data needs from data ingestion and data blending to data visualization, from Machine Learning algorithms to data wrangling, from reporting to deployment, and more. KNIME Analytics Platform is based on a graphical user interface for visual programming. This makes it very intuitive and easy to use, considerably reducing the learning time. KNIME Analytics Platform has also been designed to be open to different data formats, data types, data sources, data platforms, as well as external tools.Because of its graphical interface, computing units are represented as small colorful blocks, named “nodes.” Assembling nodes in a pipeline, one after the other, implements a data processing application. The pipeline is called “workflow” (Figure 3).KNIME Analytics Platform is the core software. However, it can be integrated with a number of packages to work on unstructured data. The KNIME Text Processing extension takes care of all text-based operations, from pure cleaning to keyword extraction, from latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) implementation to words and frequencies extraction.A workflow can also be executed from a web browser through the KNIME Server. Dedicated nodes build input and output web components that can be assembled to compose a webpage. Inserting these special nodes within a workflow provides stopping points in the execution flow, where an input is required or an output is displayed.Given all those characteristics — openness, flexibility, open source, text processing extension, visual programming, and optional web-based execution — we have chosen it to develop our “Guess the Song” game application.Read More: Key Social Media Monetization Tactics for Mobile-First Gaming Brands Figure 7. “Guess the Song” game. Sure, some of us might have more song expertise, but still it seems hard to get 100 percent right guessing the songs based on their word cloud. How many songs did you guess right?Read More: How to Analyze Your Lead Generation Form Using Google Tag Manager Figure 5. Content of the metanode named “Text Processing.” Path of the file containing the song lyrics is passed to a File Reader node, where the song text is read. Then the text is converted to a special Document type, cleaned from punctuation, and standardized to lowercase letters. Finally the Bag of Words node parses the text and extracts all words, and the TF node calculates their relative frequencies.Inner Loop to Allow a Maximum of Three Guesses for Each SongThe inner loop takes the list of words with their frequencies and builds the corresponding word cloud with a Tag Cloud (JavaScript) node inside the metanode named “Word Cloud & Answer.” In the same metanode, a QuickForm String Input node collects the guess from the player (Figure 6).Notice that the metanode named “Word Cloud & Answer” generates a webpage when running on a web browser via the KNIME Server, and specifically, it generates the webpages reported in Figure 1. JavaScript visualization nodes and Input QuickForm nodes are special nodes. If placed inside a metanode and executed on a web browser, they produce a webpage displaying the corresponding JavaScript-based views and input forms. Such web components (forms and views) can be strategically placed within a grid layout, as defined inside the metanode. Figure 6. Content of the metanode named “Word Cloud & Answer.” Notice that this metanode builds a webpage when running on a web browser via the KNIME Server. The webpage consists of the word cloud from the Tag Cloud (JavaScript) node, a textbox from the String Input node, and the usual header as implemented in the Generic JavaScript View.Creating the Landing Page with Summary PerformanceThe metanode named “Guess Summary” concludes the game, both by concluding this workflow and by creating the last landing page. The landing page offers a short summary of the successes vs. failures of your “guess the song” attempts, via a Bar Chart (JavaScript) node and a Text Output node for comments.Read More: How Can AI Boost Your Email Personalization Performance?Did You Guess?I think you have had enough time by now. Have you guessed? Well, if you haven’t, or if you have and want to know if you’re right, below are the answers. Figure 4. Content of the metanode named “Prepare Data.” You can see a node to read the Excel file with the list of songs, a node to perform the random shuffling, then a node to extract the top 10 songs after shuffling, and finally a column filter node to keep only the necessary input attributes. The metanode named “style” sets the running style for all webpages. This operation is performed by a “Generic JavaScript View” node. This node is one of those integration nodes, like the Python Script node or the R Snippet node, which is allowed to write small pieces of code within a KNIME workflow and treat them as nodes as well.Outer Loop to Process All Songs One by OneThe light blue nodes delimit a loop. One node starts the loop (the Start node) and one ends the loop (the End node). Here we have an external loop to process the song texts one by one and an internal loop to allow the player up to a maximum of three guesses. The outer loop starts from the first song in the random list, reads the text, cleans it from punctuation, and extracts all words together with their relative frequency measure. This all happens inside the metanode named “Text Processing.”The nodes inside this metanode belong to the KNIME Text Processing extension. You need to install it in KNIME Analytics Platform to continue. Check this YouTube video on how to install KNIME extensions.center_img At any important political or social event, the aftermath of the keynote speech is often entrusted to a Word Cloud. The large size of the most frequently repeated words supposedly conveys the central topics of the speech. Is it really so? Can we really entrust a word cloud to convey, even if only partially, the essence of the speech? How informative is a word cloud really?Would I be able to understand my colleague’s speech if it just came in the form of a word cloud?Would I even be able to identify my preferred song if I could see its word cloud? SpaceX Starship Moves Closer to Launch With Successful Engine Test

first_img Why Billy Hargrove from ‘Stranger Things’ Looks So Familiar Stuff Niantic Should Add to ‘Pokemon GO’ Maisie Williams’ Transformation is Turning Heads By Ryan Whitwam on July 8, 2019 at 4:02 pm Willow Smith’s Transformation is Turning Heads This Is Where ‘The Man With the Golden Voice’ Ended Up Saying Goodbye to Johnny Depp 8 Comments SpaceX’s next-generation Starship rocket is one step closer to launch today following a successful engine test. According to CEO Elon Musk, the engine performed as expected during a 51-second test burn. Based on previous timelines, Musk suggests the Starship “Hopper” could be ready for its first untethered flight later this month. The Starship will eventually take over from the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy as SpaceX’s primary launch vehicle. That’s still off in the future, though. The company is still developing the technology that will let the Starship reach orbit, the moon, and even Mars. The current hurdle is the new Raptor engine that will power the Starship. SpaceX has yet to build a Raptor that can survive more than 100 seconds of cumulative test-fires, and Musk has insisted on pushing most hardware to the breaking point. It appears SpaceX is starting to learn a thing or two about the new engine designs, though. Past test engines have suffered from a nasty vibration resonance at 600Hz, which could shake the engine apart in flight. However, the sixth Raptor prototype (SN06) tested over the weekend at SpaceX’s facility showed no sign of vibration issues, according to Musk. The next-gen SpaceX vehicle will actually consist of two stages: the cargo/crew Starship and the Super Heavy launch stage. Super Heavy will have 31 Raptor engines, each one with more than twice the thrust of the Merlin 1D engines. The Starship will have six Raptor engines, three for use in the atmosphere and three for use in a vacuum. Exciting progress in Boca! Hopper almost ready to hover. Based on tonight’s test, looks like 600 Hz Raptor vibration problem is fixed. pic.twitter.com/9bLWOHG0sV— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 7, 2019SpaceX is currently working on the “StarHopper,” which will demonstrate the craft’s ability to hover and land safely. Musk says the engine test did end with a safety abort, but that was expected. The team used the test to explore different fuel mixture ratios, causing the shutdown after 51 seconds. With the latest engine test finished, it could just be a matter of weeks before SpaceX fires up the prototype for an untethered flight. It previously flew a Starship Hopper on a tether in April. SpaceX has one Starship prototype under development in Texas and another in Florida. Once the Hopper phase is complete, SpaceX will scale the rocket up to prepare for spaceflight. The company hopes to begin commercial launches with the Starship as soon as 2021. Crewed flights, including the “Dear Moon” orbital mission, could follow soon after. Now read:SpaceX Fires Mars-Bound Raptor EngineElon Musk Explains Why the Starship Will Be Stainless SteelSpaceX Renames In-Development ‘BFR’ to ‘Starship’ SpaceX Starship Moves Closer to Launch With Successful Engine Test You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet ‘IT Chapter Two’ Director Has Another Horror Remake In Mind Things Only Adults Notice in ‘ThunderCats’ Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 0shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Brooklyn Electric Car Races Add Showroom Stock Cars

first_img You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet Maisie Williams’ Transformation is Turning Heads 7 Comments 10 Scientifically Proven Side Effects of Growing a Beard The Formula E electric car race in Brooklyn this weekend may be the slickest sporting event in the Big Apple this year. It’s a look at the future of auto racing. It’s on the waterfront of the city’s hippest borough, with the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street in the background. Formula E has much of the sophistication of Formula 1 but without the throbbing noise of unmuffled engines and the crowded races that draw in five to 10 times as many people. With the improvement in battery technology, Formula E now runs as a nonstop race without the need to change cars halfway through. And the Saturday and Sunday races are preceded each day by a sedan race (top photo) using nearly identical Jaguar i-Pace electric cars — little modified from what Jaguar dealers sell to the public. In Brooklyn, fans in the grandstand are just a few feet from the racing. In most auto races, being this close means your ears would ring for days afterward. What Is Formula E?Parts of the world are concerned about climate change, emissions and air quality, yadda-yadda. So FIA, the governing body of motorsports, wants to get ahead of the climate curve and promote a form of motorsport that looks toward a cleaner form of racing in the kinds of cars we’ll be — possibly — driving in the near future. That means electric vehicles. Formula E, E for electric, formed five years ago under the umbrella of FIA, the governing body for much of motorsport.Note: Do not confuse FIA, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, which governs world motorsport, with FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the governing body of world futbol/soccer. The difference? One is seen as a bunch of old men, autocratic rules, and a lot of money changing hands whereas the other … uh, never mind. To their credit, FIFA doesn’t have vuvuzelas any more and FIA never did.To the untrained eye, Formula E cars look like open-wheel, combustion-engine Formula 1 race cars — or, for that matter, the Indycar racers that mostly run in the US. They run on the power of lithium-ion battery packs. There was one set of rules for seasons 1-4 and another for the current season 5, which concludes this weekend in the US. Some parts of the car are specified to save costs, such as the kevlar-and-carbon-fiber body, OZ wheels, Michelin tires, the motor, and the McClaren Applied Technologies battery. The power inverter spec is open and so is the race strategy.Reports have the current cars costing about $900,000 to build (€800,000) versus about $445,000 (€400,000) for the first-generation. The current cars develop 335 hp and weigh 900 kg or an Orwellian 1,984 pounds. But there’s no power steering and the drivers’ arms get a workout. They reach 60 mph or 100 kph in about 2.8 seconds, about the same as a Formula 1 racer, but the top speed is way different, about 175 mph (speed governed) versus 235 mph.In seasons 1-4, the battery wouldn’t last the entire race, so drivers swapped to a second car around the halfway point. But no more. This is the paddock at the 2018 Brooklyn ePrix, as Formula E is called, race.No More Changing Horses in MidstreamThe biggest change for season 5 is the bigger battery that allows cars to go the entire distance of the race. Batteries had been 28 kilowatt-hours (kWh), but now for 2018-19 are 54 kWh. The races had been 80-100 kilometers or 50-60 miles, or 33-46 laps depending on the circuit length. Now there is a fixed race time of 45 minutes plus one lap. (Which is roughly what the previous races took.)At roughly the halfway point, drivers used to pull into their teams’ paddock area tents, unbuckle, and step into identical second cars. Except for fans sitting in certain areas of the grandstands (photo above), there was a half-minute where the car was gone from view. For most of the first years, there also had been a mandatory time-in-pits rule of about 30 seconds (depending on the track), so drivers didn’t skimp on properly fastening their safety harnesses. Needing two cars good for only 25 minutes of racing was not good PR for electric vehicles, and that has changed for this current season. How much are 28 kWh and 54 kWh? The original Nissan Leaf had a 24 kWh battery good for about 84 miles. Now the Leaf batteries are 40-62 kWh, rated at 150-226 miles. The Tesla Model 3 has three batteries: 50 kWh (220 miles rated range), 62 kWh (240 miles), or 75 kWh (264 miles). The longest-range Tesla Model S, the 100D, has a 100 kWh battery and, with battery and software enhancements, has raised its EPA range from 335 to 370 miles. The street version of the Jaguar I-Pace has a 90-kWh battery and an EPA range of 234 miles. So even the newer Formula E battery isn’t that big compared with longer range production cars.Much of the battery technology derives from the smaller energy recovery systems in Formula 1 cars that add an extra 160 hp or 120 kW to the 1.5-liter V6 F1 engine’s 700 hp. (F1 cars actually capture energy from the deceleration and from exhaust gas heat.) For more than a decade, Formula 1 has used forms of hybrid power.Drivers say Formula E cars are simpler to drive in many ways than Formula 1 cars. But easier still isn’t easy. The driver continually runs calculations in his or her head about battery consumption and when to charge ahead versus hold back. The driver is backed up by some dozen people in the paddock monitoring race telemetry. The driver gets some, but not all, of the available information. Interestingly, the track signage tells fans — but not the drivers — how much power is left. The goal is to finish with a minimum amount of power left in the batteries. As to whether you should care: The research into battery technology and energy recovery has direct applications for passenger cars; EVs specifically, but also hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Racing is an especially important way to test thermal management of batteries and charging.Formula E halo bar over the driver glows blue (here) when the car is in Attack Mode.Extra Shots of Energy During Formula E RacesIn Formula E, drivers can boost power temporarily. One way is gimmicky, called Fanboost. Formula E fans vote online, up to six days before the race, or during the early stages of the race, for their favorite driver. The five most popular drivers in the voting get an extra five seconds of power that can be used, in one shot, to make a crucial pass in the second half of the race. (It’s unclear if Russian trolls have taken an interest in these elections.) By the rules of Fanboost, you can vote once a day.New for the current season is Attack Mode: It gives every driver an extra 25 kW of power and it must be used during the race. To activate, the driver goes outside the racing line (but still on the track) and — shades of Mario Kart — loses a bit of time in order to gain the attack mode advantage later. The number and duration of Attack Mode activations are announced to the teams an hour before the race, which requires frantic juggling. LEDs built into the “halo bar” over the driver’s head — the roll bar/stiffener in many open wheel cars — indicate the modes. Attack Mode for TV viewers includes a virtual overlay of the activation zone area, much like how first-down markers are shown for US football. The three power levels for current cars are:Base power output (2018-19) – 200 kW / 268 hp.Attack Mode – 225 kW / 302 hp. Halo bar LEDs glow blue.Fanboost – 240-250 kW / 322-335 hp. Halo bar LEDs glow magenta.Bryan Sellers, the lone American in the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy series, is second in the standings going into the final weekend. Now, a Supporting Race: eTrophyFor the fifth season, a supporting race was added, the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy for nearly showroom stock sedans (actually, SUVs) prepared by Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations. The races run on the same urban tracks as the Formula E cars. Because every car is a Jaguar, the winning car will be a … Jaguar. It also helps Jaguar build cred for the I-Pace. The I-Pace already won a trifecta of sorts in annual awards: World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car. Not to mention ExtremeTech’s own Car of the Year award.Compared with the Tesla Model S, the I-Pace is happy running lap after lap on a racetrack (as delivered from the factory), where Teslas, until recently, grew wheezy after just a lap or two. Teslas are capable of insanely fast acceleration; just don’t try to do it 10 times in a row.“Electric cars are clearly the way of the future,” says Bryan Sellers, one of the eTrophy drivers. While this is a “street circuit,” the track is laid out on roads and parking areas of the Brooklyn cruise ship terminal. The Brooklyn Weekend’s RacesThis is the final weekend of the 2018-19 Formula E ePrix and Jaguar eTrophy series, in Brooklyn’s Red Hook waterfront section that is quickly transforming from seedy to you-can’t-afford-it. There will be two races, Saturday and Sunday, with practice, qualifying, and a race each day. You can pay anywhere from $12 for admission to more than $1,000. If you’ve been to other big auto races — the Indianapolis 500 once got 300,000 attendees — Formula E Brooklyn is much more human-scale. Among other things, when a race series is building, everybody goes out of their way to be accessible to fans.Formula E has 11 teams, each with two cars. As automakers recognize the need to promote EVs, and now that a single car and battery goes the entire race, more big names are in the race series, including Audi, BMW (formerly as Andretti Motorsport), Jaguar with Panasonic, Mahindra (big elsewhere), Nissan (previously as Renault). Mercedes-Benz and Porsche join Formula E for the sixth season that begins this fall. All the series needs now is a US-flag automaker. The New York race is unique with not one but two days of racing. It’s the only US stop on the world tour that covers Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, and other parts of North America (Mexico City, but no longer Montreal, Long Beach, or Miami). All are on urban public circuits.Ironically for a sporting event involving motor vehicles, the better way to get to the track is by public transportation rather than driving and parking. Pack sunblock. No need to pack hearing protection: The cars at 80 dB are significantly quieter than Formula 1 cars, although you can then hear hard braking, suspension bounce, the body contact (it’s a narrow track), and the wind whistling over the cars at speed. Now read:2019 Jaguar I-Pace Review: Tesla-Killer EV Is 2018’s Best CarNvidia Built One of the Most Powerful AI Supercomputers in 3 WeeksFiat Chrysler-Renault Merger Points to High Cost of Developing Electric Car The Most Inappropriate Comic Book Characters Ever Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 0shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Best Games for Laptops and LowEnd PCs in 2019

first_img Emma From ‘Friends’ Grew Up to Be Gorgeous The Hate for ‘Captain Marvel’ May Never Stop By Joel Hruska on July 19, 2019 at 8:06 am 28 Comments Half-Life 2Half-Life 2, released in 2004, is still recognized as one of the best first-person shooters of all time. Play as Gordon Freeman, a silent protagonist working to free Earth from the clutches of the insidious Combine, an alien invasion force. Half-Life 2 and its two expansions (Episode 1 & 2) will all run on virtually any system, but be advised — Episode 2 ends on a cliffhanger that’s never been resolved. <><><>1234 Lilly From ‘Princess Diaries’ Is 36 Now and Gorgeous This Is Where ‘The Man With the Golden Voice’ Ended Up As fun as gaming is, it’s not always possible to sit at the high-end of the market and play the latest titles. Whether you’re traveling with a lightweight system, using a secondary rig, or simply working from an old PC because you can’t afford an upgrade, we’ve put together a list of titles you can still enjoy, even from an older system. One of the greatest strengths of PC gaming is its backward compatibility. Thanks to the steady advance of system performance, even at the integrated graphics level, even modest machines from several years ago can enjoy a huge range of games today. The titles on our list below range from relatively recent games that run well on even modest systems to old titles that still hold up today.Keep in mind, however, that after decades of publishing, there aren’t just “20 great games you can play on laptops and low-end PCs.” There are hundreds, possibly thousands of titles that still run well on even low-end hardware. Travel back to the early days of the 3D era, and even Intel integrated GPUs have far more horsepower than the GPUs that powered games like Quake II or The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. GoG has a huge list of games released from 2004 or earlier that would run well on even an aging Atom netbook today, and Steam has many of these as well. We’ve tried to cover a range of franchises and titles, from indie games to AAA releases, and with multiple genres represented.Without further ado, here’s the first part of our list:  So that’s our list. Feel free to chime in with your own. What older games or titles still have a cherished spot on your hard drive, and what games do you find yourself returning to, long after they’ve supposedly been surpassed by more recent releases? Now read:The 30 Best Free PC Games to Play in 2019AMD’s RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT Reviewed: RDNA Puts Radeon Back in the GameAMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X Reviewed: Red Storm Ryzen Ginny From ‘Harry Potter’ Is 28 and Unrecognizably Gorgeous You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet Kerbal Space ProgramKerbal Space Program is a simulator / game that tasks you with launching successful spacecraft and (if you choose) exploring your own solar system. Once upon a time (the late 1990s to mid-2000s) Valve was famous as a game developer as opposed to for running a massive PC game distribution service. In most of the cases below we’ve chosen to focus on sequels because oftentimes, they represent the pinnacle of Valve’s game design for a given franchise. Still, in all the cases we highlight, there were previous titles — a Half-Life to Half-Life 2, a Team Fortress to TF2, etc. If you’re looking for an even gentler title (a cubicle wall could run HL2 these days), these could well suit:  Mahershala Ali Gives Respect To Wesley Snipes’ Role As Blade Best Games for Laptops and Low-End PCs in 2019 We Finally Understand Why ‘Criminal Minds’ Got Canceled Actors Who Could Barely Stomach Kissing Each Other on Screen Tagged In gaminggamesPC gamingvalvecivilizationFalloutretro gamingclassic gamingHalf-LifebioshocksourceDarkest Dungeonlow-end gameslow-end PCsUndertale Post a Comment 28 Commentslast_img read more

Oracle Collaborates with Top Oracle PartnerNetwork Platinum Level Members to Rethink Customer

first_imgOracle Collaborates with Top Oracle PartnerNetwork Platinum Level Members to Rethink Customer Data Platform Market PRNewswireJune 17, 2019, 8:25 pmJune 17, 2019 To help organizations quickly and easily bring together customer data from across the entire organization, Oracle is collaborating with Accenture and Capgemini to address the hype and confusion around the Customer Data Platform (CDP) market. In collaboration with two Platinum level members of Oracle PartnerNetwork, Oracle is moving beyond current CDP capabilities to power richer digital marketing and customer experiences across the entire customer journey. This includes delivering the technology and best practices that help organizations understand and map different customer data sources, define business outcomes and key performance indicators for customer intelligence projects, and create a single and dynamic view of the customer. The CDP market has quickly expanded as marketing technology vendors have launched point solutions to try and help marketers bring together various customer data sources to better understand and engage known customers. Overall, this first wave of CDP solutions has failed to address the challenge of creating a single and dynamic view of the customer due to the complexity of integration, the need to address the entire customer journey and a limited set of use cases/capabilities centered on B2C marketing.Marketing Technology News: DAA Announces Enforcement Deadline for ‘Political Ad’ Guidelines and Transparency Icon“Clients across industries are eager to leverage the power and insights that CDP solutions offer but are concerned about the perceived cost and complexity of bringing different customer data sources together,” said Lucia Lesar, global practice lead for Oracle CX at Accenture. “Building on nearly 30 years of teaming with Oracle to help clients with digital transformation, this new joint initiative will enable us to better address these challenges, along with changing customer expectations, so that our clients can unify their data for a more holistic view of the customer that they can act on dynamically.”To provide B2B and B2C organizations with a complete customer intelligence platform for managing customer data, Oracle launched Oracle CX Unity in October 2018. Oracle CX Unity provides brands with powerful and actionable insights in context, in motion and in real time across the entire customer experience by providing the ability to bring together online, offline and third-party customer data sources. This unique approach provides organizations with a fast and easy way to bring together customer data from across the entire organization and across the entire customer journey. In addition, Oracle CX Unity goes one step further than existing CDP solutions by applying built-in machine learning to prescribe the optimal experience within existing business processes.Marketing Technology News: SentinelOne Announces $120 Million Series D“The customer journey has changed beyond recognition, making it much harder to gain a single source of customer truth,” said Jane Arnold Hommet, Global Partner Executive for Oracle at Capgemini. “As our clients adapt to the evolving nature of customer interactions, they are looking for customer data strategies and data sources that go beyond marketing which can enable anyone within their teams to have quick and easy access to comprehensive customer insights and intelligence.”Oracle CX Unity is pre-integrated with Oracle Customer Experience (CX) Cloud to enable intelligence to be applied across every customer touchpoint. Oracle CX Cloud is an integrated set of applications which empower organizations to take a smarter approach to customer experience management and business transformation initiatives. Accenture and Capgemini are helping enterprise companies tap into all that Oracle CX Unity has to offer.“The CDP market is a confusing place right now with lots of promise and hype, but very few solutions that can provide a comprehensive view into customer interactions across channels and applications,” said Rob Tarkoff, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle CX Cloud. “To address the challenges of this first wave of CDP solutions and provide our customers with the scale and precision needed to make every customer interaction truly matter, we are delivering CX Unity, our customer intelligence platform, in partnership with experts in customer data such as Accenture and Capgemini.”Marketing Technology News: New Global Report Reveals 9 in 10 Companies See ‘Self-Service’ as the Future for Customers customer experienceData PlatformMarketing TechnologyNewsOracle Previous ArticleDatabricks Accelerates APJ Expansion Following $250 Million Funding RoundNext ArticleCoreMedia Announces CoreMedia Content Cloud – Marketing Connector on Salesforce AppExchange, the World’s Leading Enterprise Cloud Marketplacelast_img read more

Translation and Localization Options for Getting into More Markets Faster

first_imgTranslation and Localization: Options for Getting into More Markets Faster Ofer TirosJune 21, 2019, 9:00 pmJune 19, 2019 Speaking the language of a target audience is key to market penetration and success. A new batch of Translation and Localization tools automates the process and expedites penetration into new markets. But do they successfully achieve the quality language that native speakers expect? Even the world Localization is a case in point. In the US you would use a “z” while in Europe you would use an “s” – and say “whilst.” So you are constantly making localized, or localized, choices – even within the same language. All can agree that adapting Marketing campaigns to additional foreign markets, or to multilingual domestic markets, can be a good thing in principle. You will always be more effective if you speak the language of your audience. But at the heart of every such decision, there is a cost-benefit calculation. Will the extra effort and expense of Localizing be justified by business results?  Is there a risk that low quality or problematic Translation will backfire and create negative impressions?Professional: Best Quality, But at a PriceThose who want to play it safe and aim for the highest quality outcome will pay a premium and turn to a top-echelon Translation company. Tomedes stands out from the pack for its sensitivity not just to technical quality of the Translation but also to cultural issues affecting how certain word choices work in specific national or regional markets.Every marketer is told about the classic snafu decades back when General Motors wanted to introduce its Chevrolet economy car to Mexico. Turns out that Nova in Spanish also means “no go” – and that’s exactly how the Nova Marketing campaign supposedly went, or, rather, didn’t go. Turns out the whole story was an urban legend. But even in less extreme or more historical cases, nuances can get easily lost in Translation if one ignores the shades of grey in the connotations of words and phrases. But let’s say you’re a bit bolder and seek a less expensive Localization solution, rather than passing the responsibility to an expert Translation and/or Localization agency. What are your options?Read More: Navigating GDPR: Preparing for What’s to ComeMiddle Road Localization: Manage FreelancersThere are huge freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Freelancer. There you can find hundreds of freelance translators from one language to another. Make sure to check their rating and reviews, seeking the top tier with similar projects under their belts. Look for specifics in their resumes and online profiles. Check that they specialize in exactly what you are looking for: Website translations, internationalization of printed collateral, video campaigns or TV spots. Each of these has its own set of language standards, so you need to seek out professionals who have that specific experience or expertise. When you negotiate a contract, make sure to specify if you are working by an hourly rate, by a fixed fee, or by a word rate. If the latter, specify if it is measured by the words in the original document or the resulting translation. This will avoid misunderstandings. The pros and cons of this route? There’s the logistical and management complication of seeking out, contracting, instructing, reviewing and evaluating the work of a bunch of Translation and Localization freelancers. Everything can go smoothly, or your chosen contractor can get the flu, go on a bender, or take an unexpected holiday in Spain. If you deal with a professional Translation agency, they relieve you of that headache and uncertainty. You’ll pay some overhead for that, but it may well be worth it. If it goes smoothly, you can pat yourself on the back for a wise and frugal choice.Read More: Key Social Media Monetization Tactics for Mobile-First Gaming BrandsTranslation Automation Options: Localize but at What Cost?If you scan Digital Trends or gobble down the Marketing technology news, as most of us do, we’re constantly on the lookout for automation options that use AI or other smart approaches to optimize laborious manual tasks. There are plenty of tools out there for various kinds of Translation and Localization uses. For Localizing software, such as store-download apps or installable applications, there’s a whole category of software-specific products that rapidly adapt databases or lists of terms to different languages. Some products apply “Machine Translation”– the most famous and popular being Google Translation and Amazon Translate. Others “assist” translators or manage the Translation process for professionals in a Translation or Localization agency (see first section above) or dedicated Localization teams in a company. In these categories, Transifex and MemoQ stand out in a recent G2 survey.Even if you take this route, it’s probably going to be a good idea to hire a professional Translation or Localization agency or an expert freelancer to at least check the automated work. That way you can avoid embarrassing mistakes and get the best balance of cost, quality, and time to market.Read More: How Can AI Boost Your Email Personalization Performance?
