Dear Film Festivals 10 Things Id Like You to Stop Doing Love

first_imgHow can a film festival position itself better to attract great submissions and talent? One filmmaker weighs in.For the last 12 years, I have been teaching producing, directing and film business at Confederation College, in a film program in Canada. My short films have been executive produced by top directors, such as David Cronenberg, Paul Haggis and Roger Corman. My work has selected by hundreds of film festivals over the years, and I have presented practical film festival workshops in England, Australia, Canada and the U.S. I’m currently nearing the end of a year-long festival run with my directorial feature debut, The Pineville Heist. In short, I’ve seen a lot of film festivals in my time. And when MovieMaker gave me the chance to contribute this op-ed, I thought of 10 things I’d like to banish from the festival circuit forever. So:1. Poor CommunicationI get it. Thousands apply, and every programmer’s inbox is filled to the brim with eager filmmakers wanting to know where to send Blu-rays and schedules. But waiting forever to hear back from a festival is frustrating. Advertisement LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Facebook Advertisement Login/Register With: A simple solution is to ensure your website is up-to-date. Provide a Q&A section to answer questions. If your selection dates change, update your website and social media pages so filmmakers are aware. If you do this, we will email less often! If the festival seems unorganized and fails to respond or provide information, I may not invest the $1,000+ it could cost to show up.2. Being Late to Select FilmsI love going to festivals, meeting new people, seeing cool films and sharing my movie with new audiences. But when a festival selects my movie five days before its event, flights are inevitably more expensive to pay for. A minimum of six weeks notice on selections would probably allow more filmmakers to attend. Flights, hotels and car hire can make attendance out of reach, especially when the airfare costs can more than double when the journey is less than a month away.3. Being Slow to Release Nominations and Award NewsWho doesn’t want to walk away with a nomination or two—or better yet, an award? Sadly, some filmmakers can’t be there for the gala events, especially without notice. So please release the nomination list in advance. One U.S. festival I submitted to went dark for three months. No social media posts, no web updates—nothing. Then suddenly I learned we’d won an award, months later. No email. No communication. Thanks for the award, but I had given up on the event. In today’s instant world of technology, a festival should have the award list update ready, so that the filmmakers can get the news with a simple click.4. Holding Multiple Events at the Same TimeHolding multiple screenings may allow a festival to select more films, but it comes with a price. On numerous occasions, a local favorite with an entourage or a film with star power has drained away the festival crowd and left my screening, virtually empty. Or the cool new friends you just met can’t attend your screening, because they have to be at their own screenings at the same time. Sure, bigger festivals may need to take this route, but if you are a smaller, local or regional festival, consider promoting one movie at a time. Advertisement Twitterlast_img read more

Canadas Linda Evangelista From supermodel to mom to antiaging evangelist

He couldn’t get it through the door!” It pays to be Linda Evangelista’s son.More than 25 years after she uttered one of the most famous lines in fashion history — “We don’t wake up for less than $10,00 a day” — she filled me in the other night in Toronto about her 11-year-old son getting wind of the wily quote not so long ago.It was when they had heard it riffed on in the animated TV series Teen Titans, of all places, and she’d had to explain it to him, shortly after which dear Augustin, her boy, serendipitously found himself in a trivia competition at the family-friendly haunt Dave & Busters.center_img LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Advertisement Facebook Advertisementlast_img read more

Annan postpones Asia trip to tackle UN budget and other political issues

“The Secretary-General has informed the governments of China, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Viet Nam of his intention of postponing the upcoming Asian visit because of pressing matters, in particular the discussions over the UN budget and other urgent political issues,” Marie Okabe said.General Assembly committees have been holding talks on new ways for the UN to deal with human rights, peace building and management reforms, as well as the budgetary implications of these new initiatives.UN Controller Warren Sach told a news conference yesterday that proposals to fund the world body for just the first three months out of the next biennium so as to postpone confrontations over reform of the Organization might leave it in serious financial straits early next year. The $3.89 billion regular budget proposal before the Fifth (Administrative and Budgetary) Committee included some $73.4 million to cover reform recommendations adopted by world leaders attending a UN Summit in September, he said. Cash requirements for the first quarter of the year would amount to $450 to $500 million, but only $170 to $180 million would probably be received, leaving a $320 million gap for the quarter. The regular budget includes all the mandated activities of the UN, except for peacekeeping operations, international tribunals, specialized agencies and the Headquarter facilities master plan. Those are funded through other assessments and contributions.Mr. Annan’s Asia trip was to have dealt with issues ranging from bird flu to UN reform. In Hong Kong he was to have addressed the opening of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) ministerial conference. read more

You cannot let more people die on your watch in Syria deputy

“Food, water and medicine are not bargaining chips or favours that the parties to a conflict can grant or deny at will; they are basic necessities that lie at the very essence of survival and the right to life, which this Council and its members have a responsibility to protect,” Ms. Kyung-Wha Kang, the Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, told the 15-member body during a briefing. She recalled that for more than four years, the humanitarian community has sounded the alarm about the impact of Syria’s conflict on ordinary men, women and children.“We have requested, called for, insisted and demanded that the conflict be brought to an end, that civilians be protected from the relentless violence and access be granted for life-saving humanitarian assistance,” Ms. Kang declared, highlighting that requests have mostly gone unanswered. In recent days, the world’s conscience has been shocked by harrowing images of malnutrition and hunger in the Syrian town of Madaya, where siege and starvation, which top UN officials say is being used as a “weapon of war,” is having devastating consequences for civilians.Raising the alarm, Ms. Kang said the situation there is not unique. According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), around 400,000 people throughout Syria are trapped in areas besieged by the various parties to the conflict. This includes towns and villages besieged by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, or Da’esh), by Government and allied forces, and by non-state armed groups and the Al Nusra Front.“The United Nations and its partners have worked tirelessly for over four years to bring life-saving assistance to people in need across Syria,” she stressed to the Council. This week, on 11 and 14 January, inter-agency convoys comprised of 130 trucks reached the towns of Madaya, Foah and Kafraya with urgent assistance for over 60,000 people, including food and nutritional support, medicines and medical equipment, and non-food items. Separately, the third part of a series of convoys brought assistance to over 3 7,000 people in Al Waer in Homs Governorate. Further assistance is scheduled to reach the areas later this week. While these developments are positive and welcome, Ms. Kang said they are a trickle. In 2015, the UN was able to reach less than three per cent of besieged areas; in 2014, the figure was less than five per cent.Meanwhile, throughout the years of the conflict, 80 requests for inter-agency cross line convoys to besieged and hard-to reach areas, out of a total of 113, went unanswered. This week, the UN submitted requests for further inter-agency convoys to bring life-saving assistance across the country. “These requests and other outstanding requests must be approved as a matter of urgency and without delay,” she stated. “Similarly, the slow and bureaucratic procedures that have been imposed on humanitarian operations in Syria must be simplified and streamlined.”She recalled that there is no alternative to a political, negotiated solution to this desperate conflict, and urged the Security Council and all relevant stakeholders, in particular those that support the warring parties, to put their differences aside and place Syria on a firm path to peace.Ms. Kang’s call on the Council comes as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today confirmed cases of severe malnutrition among children in Madaya, where “emotionally distressed and mentally drained” doctors are working around the clock to save lives with very limited resources and local relief workers have reported 32 people have starved to death in the past month.“UNICEF is particularly saddened and shocked to have witnessed the death of Ali, a severely malnourished 16-year-old boy who passed away in the town’s clinic in front of our eyes,” said Hanaa Singer, the agency’s Representative in Syria, in a statement, which also noted that at the make-shift hospital UNICEF visited, there were only two doctors and two health professionals working under overwhelming conditions. The UNICEF team and staff of the World Health Organization (WHO) were able to screen 25 children under five for malnutrition using the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference measurement. Twenty-two of the children showed signs of moderate to severe malnutrition. All of these children are now receiving treatment at the health facility using specialized medical and nutrition supplies that the UN and ICRC delivered on Monday.Acknowledging that the mission’s findings are by no means a representative sample and the UN cannot yet draw conclusions from it about the overall nutrition situation, Ms Singer said it nevertheless provides a “real time reflection” of the situation on the ground in Madaya. The UN teams together with SARC plan to continue the assessment on Sunday for further follow up.“While we express our shock over the situation in Madaya, let us not forget that across Syria, there are 14 other ‘Madayas,’” said Ms. Singer, stressing that these are locations where different parties to the conflict have been using siege as a tactic of war, depriving children and innocent civilians from accessing lifesaving supplies and services. read more

Professors research has potential counterterrorism applications

Jeffrey AtkinsonJeffrey Atkinson’s quest to make vitamin E better for the human body has shown the potential to lead to new counter-terrorism measures while enhancing current medicinal uses of radiation.Atkinson’s research recently became the focus of an article in Nature Communications, an online journal of the reputable Nature series of publications.Ionizing radiation, which kills cells, is currently used in medical applications such as bone marrow transplants. But it can be detrimental or even deadly in uncontrolled situations such as a terrorist attack, or even prolonged exposure for flight crews on extended space missions.Atkinson’s research group has created compounds that mimic the positive effects of vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, but are better absorbed by the body. The Nature article highlights the results of recent experimental models showing the synthetic compounds prevented irradiation-induced deaths. The synthetic compounds also have the potential to produce other anti-cancer and cholesterol-lowering properties.Atkinson, who will move his lab to the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Complex, recently received a $33,000 U.S. grant by the Center for Medical Countermeasures against Radiation to further his work developing the chemical compounds. Brock and Atkinson also recently filed a patent for one of those compounds, which could eventually help develop drugs that enable other forms of tocopherol to be useful in treating disease. read more

MOTP PS grilled by PAC over breach of procurement rules in

PM Moses NagamootooThe Public Accounts Committee heard that not only was the vehicle delivered almost one year late but 100% of the $13M total was actually paid up front with two cheques using monies that had been allocated for the previous year. The explanations to the Committee caused Edghill to blurt out “everything is wrong about this transaction and it falls on the lap of the Accounting Officer (Permanent Secretary Moore).”He adopted the position, while the purchase of the vehicle is for the Prime Minster, it cannot be a case where the rules of the Fiscal Management and Accountability Act (FMAA) are flouted. The Permanent Secretary indicated to the Committee that the money was allocated in 2015 for the Purchase of the vehicle and that the cheques had been cut with the expectation the vehicle would be delivered in a timely manner. This did not obtain, and instead two cheques were processed totaling $13M and paid to Beharry Automative Sales Limited. Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of the Presidency (MOTP), Abena Moore, was on Monday hauled over the proverbial coals, when she appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, to answer to queries raised by the Auditor General’s Office. Holding the post of PAC Chairperson was Bishop Juan EdghillThe resulting interrogation revealed that tens of millions of dollars were spent in breach of procurement rules or downright flagrant violations of the nation’s financial laws by the MOTP.A frazzled sounding Moore was at pains to provide answers over the several breaches that were highlighted and before wrapping up told the Committee that the expenditures for which she is unable to provide satisfactory answers were all overseen by embattled former Permanent Secretary, Omar Shariff.Shariff was fired as Permanent Secretary after being arrested in connection with investigations by the State Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) over the alleged theft of billions at MOTP.Holding the post of Chairperson of the Committee during the interrogation of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary was former Junior Finance Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill who was forced to upbraid Moore, saying accounting officers and professional staffers at government ministries must not buckle to the pressure of policy makers, “and politicians that cause us to bend the rules.”Moore was at the time being grilled over the bizarre circumstances surrounding the purchase of a multi-million dollar luxury vehicle for Prime Minister (PM), Moses Nagamootoo. read more

Hurricane Irma forecast to be an expensive problem

first_img Economy records real growth of 1.8 per cent in 2017 Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Finance Minister says Christie’s administration left millions in Collateral Calls Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Recommended for you Bahamas, September 5th, 2017 – Nassau –  The cost of damages by Hurricane Irma could be as high as Hurricane Matthew, $600m and that said the Finance Minister, would not be good for the country’s economy.  Beyond the emotional heartbreak when property is lost or damaged in a storm, when the country suffers infrastructural and environmental damages in these systems and when there is loss of life or serious injury – hurricanes and their effects also leave behind big bills and can turn economies upside down.  The Bahamas is a prime example of that, as millions have been borrowed in attempts to rebound from brutal hurricane hits, some islands are never the same; Grand Bahama is a case in point.  Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest after a meeting over the weekend related to Hurricane Irma preparations, he told media that the country is still paying for Hurricane Joaquin which hit in September 2015 and Hurricane Matthew which struck in October 2016 and now, barreling toward our islands is a new system which some forecasts say will be at Category 4 strength when it reaches Bahamas’ shores.  The minister said almost any damage will create a great setback, something The Bahamas can ill afford. By Deandrea Hamilton Related Items:#magneticmedianews, #PeterTurnquestlast_img read more

PortlandVancouver low on housing segregation list

first_imgWith a higher percentage of mixed-income housing, the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area ranks No. 29 in housing segregation by income out of 30 of the nation’s largest metro areas, according to a study released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center. The share of lower-income households in predominantly lower-income neighborhoods and upper-income households in affluent neighborhoods increased by 6 percentage points in the Portland area since 1980, compared with 14 percentage-point growth nationwide, according to an index devised by the Pew.Most of the growth in segregation resulted from an increase in the number of upper-income households living in majority upper-income census tracts. However, segregation was less prevalent in the Portland area than in 28 other large metropolitan areas and in the nation as a whole. About 20 percent of lower-income households live in majority lower-income census tracts in the Portland area, compared with 28 percent nationwide. About 5 percent of upper-income households live in majority affluent census tracts, compared with 18 percent nationwide.Factors that may have helped the Portland area retain a relatively higher percent of mixed-income housing include the city’s slower growth, efforts to curtail the city’s smaller urban growth boundary and encouragement of development closer in, a predominantly white population, and less income inequality among its population as compared with metro areas such as Houston, said Charles Rynerson, demographer with Portland State University’s Population Research Center.Slow growth and the urban growth boundary prevent quick development of new, large neighborhoods in the suburbs, whichmight lure higher-income families from their older neighborhoods and leave lower-income families in isolation.Portland has often been referred to as the whitest city in America, and its city limits are, in fact, the whitest among large cities. Portland’s metro area is the nation’s seventh whitest metro area. About 76.3 percent of the metro area’s population is both white and non-Latino. Hence, “white flight” may be less prevalent than in more diverse cities, Rynerson said.last_img read more

Catalonia is Spain crowd chants at Barcelona rally

first_imgProtesters wave Spanish flags during a pro-unity demonstration in Barcelona on October 29, 2017. As many as one million Spaniards rallied in Catalonia`s capital Barcelona, waving national and European flags and chanting `Viva Espana!` to denounce regional lawmakers` vote to sever the region from Spain. AFPChanting “Don’t be fooled, Catalonia is Spain!” and waving Catalan, Spanish and European Union flags, hundreds of thousands of people rallied in the Catalan capital Barcelona Sunday, furious at a move by the region’s dismissed leaders to break away from Spain. The crowd, which included parents with young children, retired couples and large groups of youths, made its way along the city’s Paseig de Gracia avenue under a bright blue sky as a police helicopter flew overhead.Carmen Gutierrez, 60, an insurance worker, waved a giant red and yellow Spanish flag and danced to Spanish singer Manolo Escobar’s “Y viva Espana” (“And Long Live Spain”) as the song blared from speakers. She said she was at work on Friday when Catalonia’s regional parliament voted to declare independence and said to herself: “This won’t go far”.“I feel sorry for the people who believed it,” she said.Gutierrez, who was born in Andalusia, said Catalonia’s separatist leaders are “guilty of dividing us, guilty of putting our pensions in danger, guilty of causing our banks to leave.”That was a reference to the decision by Catalonia’s two biggest banks to move their legal headquarters to other parts of Spain in recent weeks due to the political tension. We are many -Municipal police said the crowd numbered about 300,000. Organisers said 1.3 million turned out and the central government’s representative in Catalonia put the figure at one million.“The streets don’t belong just to the separatists,” said Alex Ramos, a doctor and the vice-president of Societat Civil Catalana, a group opposed to independence that organised the rally.“Together” and “Catalonia is my land, Spain is my country” were among the signs on display at the rally.“There can’t be a Catalan republic,” said Oscar Torres, an 83-year-old pensioner.Demands for independence have sparked Spain’s biggest political crisis in decades. Catalans are divided over independence.Although two million people voted in a banned independence referendum on October 1, “there are 7.5 million Catalans”, Torres said.“We have to find a solution that can satisfy the ego of the secessionists as well as the ego of Spanish authorities.”The separatists “are very well organised, visible”, he added. But he insisted those who want Catalonia to remain a part of Spain are “much more numerous”.‘Lost friends’ -The crowd cheered and applauded a national police helicopter whenever it flew low overhead, unlike at separatist rallies where it is jeered. The separatists “can’t change the course of history like that, illegally. We are not going to let ourselves be dominated,” said Jose Cosano, a 34-year-old nurse.“They call us ‘fascists’ because we carry the Spanish flag… we have lost friends because we could not have a normal conversation, it would lead to a confrontation,” he added. Many in the crowd called for Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont to be jailed. Spain’s public prosecutor’s office will file rebellion charges against Puigdemont this week, a spokesman for the office said Friday.“The separatists took democracy like a blank cheque to do whatever they wanted,” said Santiago Cortes Perez, 72, who used to run a plastering firm.He was born in Andalusia but brought to Catalonia by his parents when he was six months old.He said he voted for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative Popular Party (PP) in the last general election in 2016. But he is aware that the party is not very popular in Catalonia because it is seen as a “reference” for supporters of former dictator General Francisco Franco. That 1939-75 regime repressed Catalan language and culture.“It must be said that the PP did not concern itself enough with Catalonia,” said Perez. “Order is needed, but also tenderness.”last_img

Quitting cigarettes may cut bladder cancer risk in women

Quitting cigarettes may cut bladder cancer risk in women

first_imgQuitting cigarette smoking may significantly reduce risk of bladder cancer in postmenopausal women, a study has found. According to the study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, the most significant reduction in risk occurred in the first 10 years after quitting, with a modest but continued decline in later years. Although bladder cancer is a fairly rare cancer type, representing an estimated 4.6 per cent of new cancer cases in 2019, it is the most common malignancy of the urinary system, with high recurrence rate and significant mortality, said Yueyao Li, a PhD candidate at Indiana University in the US. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Smoking is a well-established risk factor for bladder cancer, but findings on the relationship between duration of smoking cessation and the reduction in bladder cancer risk are inconsistent,” Li said in a statement. She added that while bladder cancer is more common in men, women often have worse outcomes, even when diagnosed at similar stages. In this study, researchers sought to analyse the dose-response relationship between time since quitting smoking and risk of bladder cancer among postmenopausal women, and to investigate whether risk among former smokers ever normalised to the risk faced by those who never smoked. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveThe researchers examined data from the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-term national health study of postmenopausal women. They included data from 143,279 women, all of whom had supplied information on whether they had ever smoked cigarettes, how much they had smoked, and whether they were current smokers. In all, 52.7 per cent of the women were categorised as “never smokers,” 40.2 per cent as former smokers, and 7.1 per cent as current smokers. As of February 28, 2017, the researchers had identified 870 cases of bladder cancer. The study showed that, in comparison to never smokers, former smokers had twice the risk of bladder cancer, and current smokers had more than three times the risk. The researchers performed analysis using various statistical models to analyse the association between years since quitting smoking and the risk of bladder cancer, and to account for variables such as education, race/ethnicity, BMI, and dietary factors. They found that the steepest reduction in risk occurred in the first 10 years after quitting smoking, with a 25 per cent drop. The risk continued to decrease after 10 years of quitting, but even after 30 or more years, risk remained higher for women who had smoked than those who never did. However, in time-updated models that reflected those who stopped smoking during the study period, the researchers found that compared with women who continued to smoke, those who quit smoking during the follow-up years had a 39 per cent decrease in bladder cancer risk, and risk continued to decline over time. Li said that while the biological mechanisms of the association between bladder cancer and smoking are not known, the study results indicate that women of any age should be discouraged from smoking, and even those who have smoked for many years stand to benefit from quitting. “Our study emphasises the importance of primary prevention (by not beginning to smoke) and secondary prevention (through smoking cessation) in the prevention of bladder cancer among postmenopausal women,” Li said. “Current smokers should be advised to quit smoking in order to reduce the risk of bladder cancer,” she added. Li cautioned that the study was based on postmenopausal women, so results may not be fully generalisable.last_img read more

HIV stigma summed up in one cruel Grindr message

HIV stigma summed up in one cruel Grindr message

first_imgGAYSTARNEWS- Got a news tip? Want to share your story? Email us . ‘You should be publicly executed’: HIV positive man shares vile Grindr messages he receivesThis film sums up the hidden meaning of Grindr messages everywhereWATCH: This HIV awareness film for men in the Middle East is like a horror movieRead the full article on Gaystarnews:  :https://www.gaystarnews.com/article/hiv-stigma-grindr/ Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading… ‘Get out there and say you’re HIV positive. It’s not a big deal and I’m going to stop other people making it a big deal.’‘Cruel and divisive’Matthew Hodson, the chief executive of NAM says such stigma is ‘cruel’ and unacceptable.‘Someone who knows their HIV status is likely to be on treatment and, if they’re undetectable, they can’t pass the virus on sexually. You’re much less likely to get HIV from someone who has been tested and felt able to tell you their status than from someone who is HIV positive but doesn’t know it.‘The stigma that people who disclose their HIV status encounter does nothing to encourage honest conversations about HIV within our communities. It also does nothing to encourage gay men to test.‘Rejecting someone on the basis of their HIV status isn’t just cruel and divisive, it’s a bad safer-sex strategy. It’s time that we rejected this unacceptable caste system within our communities. It’s time to say, “enough”.’Three-quarters of HIV positive men have experienced sexual rejection over their statusIan Howley, Chief Executive of HERO, said such HIV stigma remains common.‘In 2016, GMFA surveyed 750 gay and bisexual men living with HIV about the stigma they face. 74% said they’ve faced sexual rejection for disclosing their HIV status. 84% of these men said they received stigma on sex and dating apps. So it’s not surprising to me that this is still happening.‘There are many reasons why people respond to people living with HIV like this; fear, lack of education and some are just pure horrible people who like to feel powerful. There’s not a lot we can do to stop the last ones but we can all do our bit to end the lack of education that surrounds HIV.’He also talks of the importance of empowering HIV positive men to overcome the stigma they face.‘There is little we can do to control people being horrible but we can help and support people living with HIV to get to a place where these types of messages do not impact their self-esteem and self-worth. Knowing that these messages you receive is not really about you but about the insecurities of the person who sends them will help you overcome these messages.’See alsoWatch HIV positive guys read mean messages they got on Grindrcenter_img In the exchange, the man sends a photo of himself to Bang Bang. He is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load.‘I would never speak to someone like that,’ he said. ‘Why would you? Maybe he got me at the wrong moment, but he blocked me and I can’t answer back so I decided to screen shot it and just put it out there. If I could get one person to see that that’s not acceptable behavior, then good.’The impact of HIV stigmaHe admits that he at first was upset by the message.‘I did have a cry. I don’t constantly have the energy to stand up and fight. Sometimes you’re home alone with your cats with some cold pizza and then you get a message like that.’However, his upset turned to determination. It reaffirmed for him the importance of talking about HIV and educating others.‘Don’t be afraid of revealing your status,’ would be his advice to others. ‘Stand up to the bullies. We stand up to racism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia – we must fight against HIV stigma and ignorance. Fivecent charge for plastic bags on its way

Fivecent charge for plastic bags on its way

first_imgConsumers are using excessively high numbers of plastic bags MPs heard on Wednesday, as discussion of a bill imposing a charge in a bid to cut plastic usage continued at the House environment committee.“Only if you see it with your own eyes you will realise. They take empty bags from the cashiers to use at home,” Charalambos Papantoniou, chairman of the supermarket association said.He told the committee that supermarkets had no objections over a charge being enforced immediately. However, the representative of plastic manufacturers asked for the bill not to be enforced at the beginning of 2018 but six months later to give them time to make arrangements. MPs heard that companies would need to reduce staff while some could close.Plastic manufacturers also oppose shouldering the responsibility of recycling. They claimed that supermarkets owe them money going back eight months in some cases and if they are forced to pay for recycling they will have cashflow problems. The director of the environmental service Costas Hadjipanayiotou said they have settled on imposing a five-cent charge on plastic bags, whose value is between 2.5 and three cents.Small businesses said they considered the charge to be high and any extras should return to consumers.Conservationists Terra Cypria said the entire sum should be returned to consumers or go to a special fund. Terra Cypria said consumers were being charged the cost of the plastic bag in any case.On Monday, Kenya introduced the world’s toughest law aimed at reducing plastic pollution.Kenyans producing, selling or even using plastic bags will risk imprisonment of up to four years or fines of $40,000, as the East African nation joined more than 40 other countries that have banned, partly banned, or taxed single use plastic bags, including China, France, Rwanda and Italy. Many bags drift into the ocean, strangling turtles, suffocating seabirds and filling the stomachs of dolphins and whales with waste until they die of starvation.Close to one trillion plastic bags are used each year, and fewer than one per cent of those are recycled. In 2006, the United Nations found that each square mile of the ocean has 46,000 pieces of plastic – and because of the currents, it congregates in certain places: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch off the coast of California is a floating mass of plastic up to twice the size of Texas, with pieces of plastic outnumbering sea life six to one.Plastic chemicals can be absorbed by the body – 93 per cent of Americans age six or older test positive for the plastic chemical BPA which can affect health, development and hormones. You May LikeFigLeaf Beta AppHow to Become Fully Anonymous Online in Less Than 3 Minutes?
