Alberta likely to take equity stake in Trans Mountain pipeline premier

first_imgCALGARY – Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says the province is likely to end up owning a piece of the Trans Mountain pipeline.Ottawa agreed to buy the Alberta-to-British-Columbia crude conduit this spring for $4.5 billion from U.S. company Kinder Morgan.Kinder Morgan had threatened to walk away from a planned $7.4-billion expansion to the line because of resistance from the B.C. government.Notley announced in May that her government would make up to $2 billion available, if necessary, to keep the project going. The federal and provincial governments want Trans Mountain to go ahead because it would enable Canadian crude to be shipped by tanker to countries other than the U.S. market.Notley said at the premier’s annual Stampede pancake breakfast in Calgary that her government is likely to buy a small equity stake in the pipeline.“I think there’s a good possibility … but I honestly can’t get into much more detail on it until all the final decisions are made,” she said Monday.“What I will say is whatever role Alberta takes is one that will absolutely be fiscally responsible and there’s a good, solid business case for it. If anything, it will open up opportunities for other Albertans.”After flipping flapjacks for crowds gathered outside the government’s downtown Calgary offices, Notley met with her cabinet. She told ministers that pieces of pipe have already arrived at yards in the industrial area of Acheson, just outside the pipeline’s starting point in Edmonton, as well as in Edson, Alta., about 180 kilometres to the west. The Acheson site is about a quarter full and the Edson site is half full, Notley said, and construction is on track to begin this month.Trans Mountain would triple the amount of Alberta crude flowing to the B.C. Lower Mainland.Once the expansion is complete, the oil is to be loaded onto tankers and shipped across the Pacific.last_img read more

UN tribunal convicts five top Serbian officials of war crimes in Kosovo

26 February 2009The United Nations war crimes tribunal set up after the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s today convicted five former high-ranking Yugoslav and Serbian officials for crimes against humanity, while former Serbian president Milan Milutinović was acquitted of all charges. Today’s judgment is the first of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for crimes by Yugoslav and Serbian forces against Kosovo Albanians during the 1999 conflict in Kosovo.Prosecutors charged the six defendants with crimes committed during a campaign of terror and violence that aimed to change the ethnic balance in Kosovo to ensure Serbian authorities’ control through criminal means, including deportations, murder and forcible transfers.Former Yugoslav Deputy Prime Minister Nikola Šainović, Yugoslav Army General Nebojša Pavković and Serbian police General Sreten Lukić were each sentenced to 22 years in prison for crimes against humanity and for violating the laws or customs of war.Meanwhile, Yugoslav Army General Vladimir Lazarević and Chief of the General Staff Dragoljub Ojdanić were found guilty of aiding and abetting the commission of a number of charges of deportations and forcible transfer of the Albanian population, for which they each received 15-year sentences. The trial chamber found, after analyzing evidence, that there was a broad violence campaign against Albanian civilians in Kosovo during NATO airstrikes in the Yugoslavia that began on 24 March 1999.This campaign was carried out by army and Interior Ministry police forces, under the control of Yugoslav and Serbian authorities, the ICTY found.“It was the deliberate actions of these forces during this campaign that caused the departure of at least 700,000 Kosovo Albanians from Kosovo in the short period of time between the end of March and beginning of June 1999,” Judge Iain Bonomy said in the courtroom at The Hague. The violence against Kosovo Albanians was intended to force them to leave their homes “in order for the state authorities to maintain control over Kosovo,” the trial chamber found. It was former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević, not Mr. Milutinović, who had direct individual control over the Yugoslav Army during the NATO campaign, the Tribunal said, acquitting the latter on all counts. read more

All train sets would be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai for which the order is a big boost in its export business. In order to foster regional cooperation with these countries, the government has been extending various lines of credit for funding railway projects for export of Indian Railways-manufactured locomotives and rolling stock. There will be three different type of coaches — AC Executive Class, Second and Third Class — and, as per the Sri Lankan requirement, they will only have seating facility.“The design of coaches is being finalised as per the customer’s choice and ICF has fully geared up to meet the export order in time,” a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the manufacturing process told IANS. Nigerias humanitarian crisis can no longer be ignored UN says launching 1

as the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria seeks more than US$1 billion to assist those in crisis in the most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) throughout 2016, human suffering has become more apparent as the Nigerian Armed Forces pushed Boko Haram out of areas the group had held. The response area shifted from Abuja to Borno state, enabling easier access to the vulnerable population for the humanitarian teams, however, the conflict scaled up and so did the urgent need for more assistance. As such, the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria seeks more than $1 billion to address the needs of those in crisis in the three most affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, about 6.9 million people.“This is the largest crisis on the African continent and I am confident that with the support of the international community and the private sector, we can begin to bring hope to the people of the north-east,” stressed Peter Lundberg, the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator, while also complimenting the Government of Nigeria and the initiative behind the Inter-Ministerial Task Force on their full cooperation to address the humanitarian situation. While fear of unexploded improvised devices prevents farmers from planting for a third year in a row, nearly 5.1 million people are expected to face serious food shortages. The Humanitarian Response Plan will aim to tackle urgent nutrition, food, shelter, health, protection, education, and water and sanitation needs. “The narrative on this humanitarian crisis can no longer be ignored and we are appealing to the international community to help us prevent the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians over the coming 12 months,” stated Mr. Lundberg. “The Government have already demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate strong commitment to working together with the international humanitarian community,” said Zainab Ahmed, Minister of State, Ministry of Budget and National Planning of Nigeria. read more

England demolition before home crowd special says Roach

I’m very proud of my achievement,” the Barbadian told reporters.“I’ve been around for a while and to be able to run in at home and obviously get my first five at home is a special, special feeling. I figure I’ve bowled better before but today is definitely one of the more special ones.“England are number two in the world, a great side and to go and put some balls in some good areas and get some wickets like that is a great feeling.”He added: “I’ve been putting the work in in the nets … and I felt really good at the crease and the ball came out very well. It’s always tough bowling but today I put the work in and I obviously got the rewards.”Replying to West Indies’ first innings of 289, England reached 30 for one without much alarm but then suffered a stunning collapse in the second session, losing their last nine wickets for 47 runs.Left-handed opener Keaton Jennings was the top-scorer with 17 as every England batsman struggled against the Windies four-pronged pace attack comprising skipper Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel and Alzarri Joseph.“We had good plans, good strategic plans [in the] team meetings and the guys went out there and obviously hit the nail on the head, and that includes all the bowlers,” Roach explained.“Today (yesterday) it was my day but in the second innings it could be someone else and I think the guys have been very, very disciplined and proud of how they bowled out England for 77.”He continued: “We communicate very well. There’s a great bond in the team with me, Shannon, Alzarri coming back in and Jason, are fantastic. The four of us have played together already and we know each other’s bowling so we communicate very well with each other. We pick on certain things and pass any information on.”Despite earning a lead of 212 runs, the Windies opted not to enforce the follow-on, and reached 127 for six at the close – an overall lead of 339 runs heading into Friday’s day three. And Roach said the increasingly unpredictable nature of the pitch had been behind their decision to bat again.“I thought it quickened up a bit … with a little bit more bounce – uneven bounce – but it’s all about putting the ball in the right areas,” he said.“Once you do that as consistently as possible, you’re going to create a lot more chances, a lot more pressure so I think we did that very well … as a bowling team.“I think 400 is obviously the target – I think 400 on that pitch is going to be pretty tough. It’s not out of the way but I think once we bowl in the right areas we should stop England getting 400 runs.”He added: “We don’t want to bat on the last day of the pitch. It looks like a tough pitch to bat last on. It’s a little bit uneven so I think batting last would be very tough for us. We think it was best we had another hit and go at the English again.” read more

Apple reaches deal to sell iPhones through Chinas largest mobile network

first_imgCHINESE USERS WELCOMED a long-awaited tie-up between Apple and China Mobile, the world’s biggest wireless operator, but analysts warned Monday that the deal’s impact depends on the quality of the carrier’s 4G network. The US technology giant and China Mobile unveiled the agreement to bring the iPhone to customers on a network with an estimated 760 million subscribers and until now dominated by low-cost Android smartphones. The US company’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C phones will be available at China Mobile and Apple retail stores across mainland China starting 17 January, they said in a joint statement.DemandChinese mobile phone users gave the deal a rousing ovation, hailing it as “a marathon love affair that finally came to a happy ending,” in the words of one fan.“It finally comes – I’ve been waiting for so long that I’m exhausted,” a user with the online handle Gluttonous Miser posted on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.Apple iPhones can currently be used on China Mobile’s 2G network, but not on its higher-speed 3G network due to a home-grown standard the carrier has adopted. While users were generally upbeat, some raised concerns about the cost of the devices to be offered by China Mobile.“Come on, the price must not let us down, it has to be encouraging, better not to go over 4,000 yuan (€480),” wrote another user. The unsubsidised price of the iPhone 5C, a model with a slightly reduced cost to appeal to budget-conscious consumers and available in a range of colours, is $550 in the US, but higher in other countries, often due to tax and regulatory issues. In China, the 5C currently sells at more than €510, and the 5S goes for €635 on Apple’s official China site. Apple and China Mobile said that pricing details under the new deal will be announced “at a later date”.However, analyst Ben Bajarin at Creative Strategies said he expects “some kind of subsidy” for the iPhone in China.“Carriers know the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market at helping them sell premium services. This is why it will always be relevant,” he said in a tweet.Negotiations between Apple and China Mobile took years, with one key hurdle reportedly being the US company’s demand for sales volume guarantees.Slow growthThe deal gives Apple a bigger entry into the huge Chinese market, as the company is facing declining market share and seeking to counter the flood of low-cost smartphones from rivals.Even though iPhone sales grew 25.6 per cent in the third quarter from a year earlier, growth was slower than the overall market and Apple’s market share fell to 12.9 per cent from 14.4 per cent in the same period last year, according to a survey by market intelligence firm IDC.But analysts said that the immediate benefit from the partnership will be limited given that many of China Mobile’s customers are already using iPhones, lessening the prospect of a sharp boost to sales. They said the main rationale for the deal was likely both companies’ strategy in the 4G era, which will allow users to – among other things – watch movies and play games on mobile networks at a much faster speed and in better quality. In the statement, Apple and China Mobile said the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C “both offer more 4G LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world.”“The collaboration between Apple and China Mobile will give a big boost to the development of China’s homegrown 4G/TD-LTE technology,” it said.China granted three state-owned operators licenses early this month to offer services on the new network, and China Mobile is rolling out the world’s biggest 4G network.“If [China Mobile’s] 4G network comes online [with good quality], the impact will be rather big,” Xu Zhipeng, a Beijing-based analyst with research firm Zero2ipo Group, told AFP.However, given the operator’s problem-prone 3G network, it will take time for Chinese users to build up confidence and accept the new network, he said.“Customers may take a wait-and-see attitude towards its 4G network and will not rush to (grab an iPhone) as its price is rather high,” Xu said.- © AFP, 2013Read: EU passes deal on universal mobile phone charger >Read: You may need tissues to watch Apple’s new Christmas advert >last_img read more

They’ll then take a nearly five-minute virtual flight and interact with Astrid, Hiccup, Toothless, Hookfang and other characters from the films — after which they’ll be shepherded through a “branded, immersive gift shop.”For DreamWorks Animation, it’s also an opportunity to hype the release of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which opens wide Feb. 22. It’s the first VR activation for the startup (whose name, spelled out, is “Spatialand”). “Collaborating with DreamWorks Animation and its iconic ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ franchise is such an exciting way to bring Spatial&’s first ever activation to the public,” said Katie Finnegan, CEO of Spatial&.It’s not Walmart’s first foray into employing tech-driven entertainment to boost engagement with customers (and, ultimately, drive up sales).
