first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Alderweireld insists Liverpool clash Spurs ‘opportunity’by Paul Vegas4 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveToby Alderweireld insists Liverpool on Sunday is an opportunity for out-of-sorts Tottenham. The defender sees the Anfield showdown as an opportunity rather than an assignment to be scared of.“You can see it two ways,” said Alderweireld after their 1-1 draw with Watford. “It’s a big opportunity for us on Tuesday. We must use that.“Then Sunday is a big opportunity. Look, we’re a team, let’s go again. Let’s go, like that second half. Our best, it’s all we can do.”That second half he referred to was the 45 minutes against Watford on Saturday which saw Spurs lay siege to the visitors’ goal until they finally cancelled out Abdoulaye Doucoure’s opener with four minutes left. last_img read more

Video: Dabo Swinney’s Passionate Halftime Speech To Clemson: “You Win With Class, You Lose With Class”

first_imgClemson players kneeling before Dabo Swinney giving a speech.ESPNThings are going pretty well for Clemson down in Miami. The Tigers took a 42-0 lead into halftime, and have tacked on another three points so far in the third quarter. CU has already started benching some starters, including quarterback Deshaun Watson. Interesting, at the beginning of the break, Dabo Swinney kept his team out on the field for a few minutes before sending them to the locker room. Video shows that he was giving a passionate speech, in which he tells his team that Clemson “wins with class” and “loses with class.” We’re not sure if Swinney was just issuing a reminder with his team up big, or if something happened with the Tigers. There was a dust-up during pregame warmups between the two teams. Either way, it is definitely interesting. Here’s a link to the video from ESPN, if the embed doesn’t load for mobile users: [TheBigLead]last_img read more

Solskjaer confident of Pogba fitness

first_imgOle Gunnar Solskjaer expects Paul Pogba to be fit for Manchester United’s blockbuster clash with Tottenham, although he played down talk of Sunday’s match representing a first real test.United have won four games from four in the Premier League since Solskjaer was put in temporary charge until the end of the season, but they were dealt a blow as Pogba missed their FA Cup victory over Reading through injury following an incident involving Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey last week. With Solskjaer taking his side to Wembley for a tricky encounter against Spurs following a favourable initial fixture list, the United boss will be pleased to have Pogba available again, having featured in recent training sessions during the clubs mid-season trip to Dubai. He’ll be OK.”Gearing up for Sunday #MUFC pic.twitter.com/32trIgVIuq— Manchester United (@ManUtd) January 10, 2019The prospect of a meeting with third-placed Tottenham should test Solskjaer’s burgeoning Old Trafford credentials, but he insisted that United have not had it easy since his arrival.”We’ve had tests,” he said. “Newcastle away is a test, the first game at Cardiff is a test, the first home game is a test.”You get tested in every single game in the Premier League. But, of course, Sunday’s game is against a top, top side. If we want to get closer to [Tottenham], we need a good performance and a good result.”Despite the improved level of the opposition, though, Solskjaer will encourage United to attack Tottenham as they have amid their four-game winning streak in the Premier League.”You always adapt to any opposition and we’re playing one of the best teams in the league, so of course we’ve got to be aware of their strengths,” he added.”But I’ve been brought up in a way that we need to attack teams. That’s our strength as well: going forward and attacking teams.”We’re not going to get as many chances to attack as we have before, so we’ve got to be ready for when we get hold of the ball, to play well with it and make sure we use the whole pitch as well.”last_img read more

We want to continue to work and learn a lot in order to bring a good team to the pitch in the summer of 2020.”Of course there is always talk in football, we are a footballing country and everyone has their opinion, but that must not disturb us in our work. Former Ohio State Coach Zach Smith Issues New Comments To USA TODAY

first_imgzach smith gives an interview on espnFormer Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith, who was fired by the Buckeyes in July, has issued some new comments on his situation and the Urban Meyer punishment in an interview with USA TODAY.Smith maintains that he never committed domestic violence against his ex-wife, Courtney Smith, and states that Ohio State poorly handled its decision to suspend Meyer.Meyer, Ohio State’s head coach since 2012, has been suspended for the first three games of the season. Athletic director Gene Smith has also been suspended.Zach Smith says that Meyer never protected him and didn’t deserve to be punished.“He never protected me,” Smith said in a telephone interview with USA TODAY Sports. “Urban knew the truth. That’s what’s lost in all this: the truth. Everything he’s said negatively about me, that’s all on Ohio State. That’s all from the pressure they put on him to keep his job because they are spineless. That’s why they fired Jim Tressel. They are absolutely spineless and that probably come from the board, the president – all of them.”Zach Smith also spoke about some of the social media reaction to the allegations against him and Meyer.“In order to be charged, you have to commit a crime and that’s the problem here,” Zach Smith said. “People on social media want to convict people for things that people really investigated and looked into. … What matters is that people who are paid to investigate, investigated and nothing came of it. People who are not paid to investigate want to convict me, but the problem is people were paid to investigate didn’t charge me. Here we are. We are dealing with social media idiots who want to convict someone on what?“There’s nothing.”You can read his full comments here.last_img read more

That’s how we are looking at it, the combinations will have to be looked at when the decision comes out and from there on we’ll see what needs to be done about the whole situation,” he added.Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are facing strict action from the Indian cricket board and the Committee of Administrators after their appearance on Karan Johar’s celebrity talk show, Koffee with Karan, created a massive stir.Hardik Pandya along with his good friend and India teammate, KL Rahul made a few borderline racist and sexist comments on the show, hosted by popular filmmaker Karan Johar.Pandya boasted about his dates and hookups with multiple women and also narrated how he informed his parents about losing his virginity.”When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, ‘Mein karke aaya hai aaj (I had sex today)’.” Pandya had said on the show.He added: “At a party, my parents asked me acha tera wala [your women] kaun sa hai, so I said yeh, yeh, yeh [pointing out to some women] and they were like ‘waah proud of u beta’.When asked by Karan Johar why he doesn’t ask women for their names at nightclubs, Pandya replied: “I like to watch and observe how they (women) move. I’m little from the black side so I need to see how they move.”HARDIK’S FATHER COMES TO HIS DEFENCEReacting to the criticism, Pandya’s father Himanshu told mid-day: “I don’t think people should read too much into his comments. It was an entertainment show and his comments were made in a light-hearted manner.”He was only looking to entertain the audience. So, it [his comments] should not be viewed very seriously or negatively. He is an innocent boy with a very fun-loving nature.”Pandya conceded that he had gotten carried away by the “nature of the show”, which is notorious for making celebrities open up on their personal lives.Nonetheless, the BCCI is mulling a two-match ban for both Pandya and Rahul after issuing a show cause notice to both players following the apology issued by Pandya on Twitter and to the board. The episode stirred up such a massive controversy in the country that Hotstar, the streaming website, seems to have deleted the particular episode with Pandya and Rahul from its site. The episode was aired this Sunday on Star World and was available on Star’s OTT platform Hotstar. Shikhar Dhawan hugely valuable player: Sanjay Bangar backs out-of-form India opener

first_img Press Trust of India RanchiMarch 8, 2019UPDATED: March 8, 2019 23:17 IST India vs Australia: Shikhar Dhawan suffered his third straight batting failure in the third ODI in Ranchi on Friday (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSDhawan has been struggling for form in the ongoing series vs Australia, managing just 22 runs in 3 inningsIf we know that Shikhar Dhawan gets going, he can give us that solidity: Sanjay BangarVirat Kohli hinted at changes to the playing XI after India lost the third ODI in Ranchi on FridayIndia’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar termed out-of-form Shikhar Dhawan as a vital cog, saying the team management wants the right-left combination to fire at the top of the order with the ICC World Cup around the corner. Report | HighlightsDhawan has managed just 22 runs in three innings in the ongoing ODI series vs Australia but Bangar feels that more than anything else, it’s his shot selection that has let him down.”In the previous game, he (Dhawan) was batting really well till he erred in shot selection. But from our point of view, he has been an important player,” Bangar said after India’s 32-run loss against Australia in the third ODI in Ranchi Friday.”If we know that he gets going, he can give us that solidity as it is vital to have that right-left combination going. He is a hugely valuable player for us and he is expected to come good very soon,” the former India all-rounder said.He was also sympathetic for Ambati Rayudu, who Friday got a brilliant delivery from Pat Cummins.”These games are valuable opportunities for all players concerned and even for us so that the players are at their utmost best when we go into the World Cup. Don’t forget that in the last game in New Zealand, Rayudu scored a match-winning 90,” Bangar said.”Today’s delivery that he got, could have gotten out any batsmen with that pace and low bounce. Players are expected to take chances and that’s what we are expecting of every player,” Bangar explained.advertisementAlso Read | India vs Australia: MS Dhoni to be rested for the last two ODIsAlso Read | Virat Kohli: Disappointed with my dismissal, it was one of my finest hundredsAlso Read | Virat Kohli’s 41st hundred not enough as India lose Ranchi ODI to AustraliaAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. BOFFO Building Fashion: Michael Bastian + Bittertang Editors’ Recommendations On the Road with Mikah Meyer, the First Person to Visit Every National Park Site in One Trip The Nomadic Beer Maestros of Evil Twin Brewing Find a Permanent Home in Queens center_img Every year, the non-profit arts organization BOFFO fuses fashion and architecture through BOFFO Building Fashion. The program connects a fashion designer who has never had a retail space with an architect who designs the space. The first of this year’s partners, menswear designer Michael Bastian and Bittertang, debuted their collaboration this week at New York’s SuperPier. Visitors can peruse through Bastian’s fall 2013 collection in the immersive space, a giant haystack created from two shipping containers. Shoppers have the chance to purchase items from the line, along with one-of-a-kind garments that can’t be found elsewhere. The Manual spoke to both Bastian, and Antonio Torres from Bittertang about the endeavor.Tell us about your fall 2013 collection.Bastian: Our fall 13 collection was inspired by Andrew Wyeth, the American painter, and that idea he lived in worked in this tiny little corner of Maine, and Maine is such an interesting state to me anyways because it’s dark and remote and freezing most of the year. It’s kind of like one of the last American wildernesses, and he explored that a lot in his painting, and we were thinking about a lot about the idea of American gothic and the darker corner of America and American menswear. How was it designing a space for the collection?Torres: All the ingredients were already set up by Michael and his description of the collection and his interest in the art and Andrew Wyeth and the Windsor chairs became a big departure point for a lot of the furniture, and formerly we also spoke a lot about a lot of New England architecture and the houses and we were kind of imagining being under an attic where you see these angles that are always pushing you down, grounding you to the floor, and creating the atmosphere and the mood for the collection, and also giving the people a more visceral experience to the whole space. What do you think of the pop-up shop?Bastian: The Bittertang guys came back and took our idea and took it 10 blocks further down the road with the idea of this cocoon made out of wax and a 20-foot hay sculpture on the exterior and incorporating all these things that we had in the collection, like the feathers and the colors, the red, white and black bird. It was one of those moments when these guys really got us.BOFFO Building Fashion: Michael Bastian + Bittertang is located at SuperPier through November 21. For more information, visit boffo-ny.org. Dinner Bells and Wild Horses at Cumberland Island’s Greyfield Inn

first_imgGreyfield is rolling out a “Mid-Week Break” package, offering travelers discounted stays during the fall and winter months. Email them for more info. [ad align=”left”]When we think of escaping to a remote island, Bora Bora or Vanuatu comes to mind. Rather far to travel for most of us. Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia isn’t quite as far but exudes quiet, mystery and incredible nature all a short flight or drive away. The southernmost coastal island on Georgia’s Golden Isles, Cumberland is only accessible via ferry from Fernandina Beach, Florida (three times a day) and the nearest airport is Jacksonville, Florida. While we have visited for a day trip, guests must bring their own food, and it’s simply too majestic to soak it all in on a day visit. While there is a campsite, the Greyfield Inn is where you really want to splash out and rest your head.Greyfield Inn is a historic mansion on the island and was the 19th century retreat of Thomas and Lucy Carnegie (the ballers of the Belle Époque). They built the house in 1890 for their daughter Margaret, then her daughter, Lucy, converted it to an inn in 1962. The family still oversees the daily operations of the inn and its 16 rooms in the house, as well as the cottages nestled under live oaks on the property. While the house is grand, the island is wild. It is run by the National Parks Service and is home to over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated wilderness. There are also a plethora of wild horses on the island. While nobody is sure how they got there (they aren’t native), they lend an eccentric touch to the Southern Gothic feel of this island.Explore maritime forests, kayak around the 18 miles of undeveloped beaches and take a 30 mile tour around the rough roads and fascinating forests. As a guest of the inn you will have access to bicycles, fishing rods, naturalist- led guided tours of the island and Natural History Jeep Tours. Be sure to check out the cultural heritage as well including the First African Baptist Church, Plum Orchard Mansion, and Cumberland Island Wharf.A proper belt busting Southern breakfast is offered up every morning, while a grab-in-go picnic basket from the back kitchen is offered for lunch. A dinner bell signals the start to a three-course dinner. The culinary program is led by their Top Chef alum, Whitney Otawka. All meals are made from scratch and seek to define and refine coastal Georgia cuisine. This 1.5-acre organic garden supplies the inn with a variety of fresh produce, herbs, fruit, and cut flowers. Gardeners use sustainable and organic growing practices, composting, cover cropping, and crop rotation to replenish and build its soils. Greyfield produces its own honey from the garden’s 20-plus beehives. One of our favorite offers at Greyfield is that they encourage guests to make their own cocktails at any time. They have provided a cornucopia of requisite tools and cocktail manuals. The ever-growing beer menu represents both international styles and craft brews from Georgia and beyond. Spirit offerings focus mainly on bourbons, alongside an artisanal rum collection and craft spirits from small distilleries including gins, vodkas, and tequilas. Steady on gents! These digs are very popular so be sure to plan this vacation well in advance. But once you do, get ready for lounging on porches, 300 year old live oaks wherever you turn, and the most exciting sound of the day, the dinner bell.Editors Note:From December 2-4, Greyfield will host a weekend-long WinterHog Roast. Events include a Friday night oyster roast, BBQ dinner, and dancing to benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance, storytelling groups around the campfire, distillery tastings, and more. Health Ministry Working on Strategic Cancer Plan

first_imgHealth Minister, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says that a strategic plan is being developed for the treatment of cancer. He said the idea is to provide an integrated approach to cancer treatment and care, and over time establish a centre of excellence, where quality care will be available at an affordable cost. The Health Minister, who was speaking to JIS News after his presentation at Friday’s (January 25) neurosciences symposium at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, said that the Ministry has identified cancer as a “big ideas” project, with major focus placed on the disease. “We have, in the first year, improved significantly, the chemotherapy unit at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and we are looking now at improving critical pieces of equipment for radiation,” he said. There has also been major upgrading of the cancer wards of the KPH and Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James. In his presentation at the symposium, the Minister reiterated plans to launch a “broad spectrum attack” on the disease to involve prevention, screening, early diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care.“We will, on a phased basis, streamline the cancer care path and systematically remove the bottlenecks to effective treatment, including reducing the high cost associated with its care and treatment,” he stated.Dr. Ferguson said he would be ready to work with the private sector, voluntary groups, universities, the Diaspora, the Caribbean Neurological Association and any other organization willing to collaborate in the effort. He stated that the establishment of an 18-station chemotherapy ward at the KPH, “is just the beginning of things to come”.last_img read more

Seven Persons Honoured By St. James Parish Council

first_img As a free people, citizens must begin to seek after that which they deserve as a nation, based on the sacrifices and achievements of the country’s heroes and heroines. Story Highlights Seven ‘unsung heroes’ in the parish of St. James were recognized on Heroes Day by the St. James Parish Council Messages from the country’s main leaders were read during the ceremony. Seven ‘unsung heroes’ in the parish of St. James, who have given outstanding service to their parish and communities, were recognized on Heroes Day (October 21), by the St. James Parish Council and presented with citations and the 2013 Sam Sharpe Awards. Those awarded at a civic ceremony, held in Sam Sharpe Square in Montego Bay, were: Madeline Lawrence, for outstanding service in the field of Health; Elez Glen for his work in Tourism; Kenroy Russell for Education; Adrian Frater for Journalism; Inspector Ralph Medley in the area of National Security; Angela McIntosh for her contribution in Sports; and Methelina Scarlett-Jones for Community Service.Congratulating the recipients, Mayor of Montego Bay and Chairman of the St. James Parish Council, Glendon Harris, emphasized that as a free people, citizens must begin to seek after that which they deserve as a nation, based on the sacrifices and achievements of the country’s heroes and heroines.“We have to rethink how we approach matters of national development and security.  We must start with our youth, because they are our only hope of a prosperous future. We  can accomplish a lot more if we focus our energy on teaching our children the right and showing them that we will not tolerate wrong doing,” the Mayor said.He pointed out that the St. James Parish Council continues to focus on the youth through such programmes as the Junior Mayor competition, which was introduced in the early 1990s.“This competition continues to provide opportunities for leadership development among our young people and has been replicated in other parishes,”  he noted. The Mayor added that the Council has collaborated with the Ministry of Education, the Transport Authority, the Island Traffic Authority, the Police, school administrators and parent teacher associations, to address the indiscipline of students on public transportation, and “we are pleased that we have seen significant improvement in the parish of St. James.”He argued that these are  just two examples of the Council’s efforts to ensure that the youth  are  well prepared to become good and productive citizens.“The values which we inherited from our fore parents must be vocalized and held high.  We must find a way to secure the heritage we possess, so we can leave our young people with much more than what we wrestled from the hands of the colonialists.  We must instill in them the values and attitudes of our heroes and heroine,” the Mayor said.Messages from the country’s main leaders were read during the ceremony. The Governor-General’s message was read by Custos of St. James, Hon. Ewen Corrodus ; the Prime Minister’s message was read by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Derrick Kellier; and the Opposition Leader’s  message was read by  Dr. Horace Chang. The activity was organized by the St. James Parish Council, in association with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), under the theme: ‘Our history … Our strength’.last_img read more
