Jamaica optimistic about bauxite industry

first_imgEnergy minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley says the future of Jamaica’s bauxite and alumina sector remains bright and prosperous, with great prospects for further investments.Industry prospects are favorableWheatley, told delegates to the 24th Bauxite Alumina Conference that the industry’s prospects are increasingly becoming more favorable as aluminum and alumina benchmark prices have risen and are set to continue climbing as global demand strengthens.“Energy cost has also been trending low, well below the 2008 (pre-crisis) levels, and is looking to remain moderate into the future,” he added. He said that Jamaica’s ongoing economic reform program has also brought about a stable macro-environment, and, consequently, the critical variables, namely debt ratio, inflation and foreign exchange reserves, “are now heading in the right direction”.Wheatley said that Jamaica’s history in the sector has given rise to skilled workers who are familiar with industry activities, as well as communities and supporting government agencies.Fruitful industry developmentsHe said industry developments have, thus far, been so fruitful that the new owners of the Alpart refinery in Nain. St. Elizabeth, Jiuquan Iron & Steel (Group) Company Limited (JISCO) of China, have undertaken a projected US$6 million investment program. He said this initiative will involve the expansion of the existing plant, the building of a new refinery to boost Alpart’s capacity to four million tonnes, expansion of facilities at Port Kaiser, construction of an Industrial Park and Special Economic Zone, and the possible use of natural gas as an energy source.Chief Executive of Noranda Bauxite and Alumina, David D’Addario said his company continues to expand its markets and has opened up trade with new bauxite customers worldwide, including China and India.D’Addario said that aluminum has even been sold for use in non-metallurgical applications where Jamaican bauxite has never been used before. He said Noranda has utmost trust and confidence in the government and that this, along with its strategic customers and financial commodities partners, was among the factors contributing to the company’s productivity.last_img read more

Opposition Parties in Haiti to Renew Protests As Efforts to Impeach…

first_imgHaiti’s President, Jovenel Moise PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Opposition political parties say they will resume anti-government protests next week to force President Jovenel Moise out of office, even as an opposition inspired attempt to impeach the head of state earlier this week failed to materialise.Secretary-General of the opposition party, Pitit Dessalin, Jean-Charles Moïse, who is also the spokesman of the Force of the opposition progressive (FOP), said that the protests would resume on August 14.Opposition legislators have been calling for the removal of Moise in the wake of allegations of embezzlement related to the PetroCaribe oil initiative with Venezuela and call fresh elections. But the head of state has defended himself against the report of the Superior Court of Accounts and Administrative Litigation (CSA/CA) into programmes and projects funded by the PetroCaribe, an oil alliance of many Caribbean states with Venezuela to purchase oil on conditions of preferential payment. In their latest move to remove Moise from office, 21 deputies had filed a motion accusing him of high treason, claiming that he had violated the Constitution and was leading the country to “the edge of the social explosion”.But the majority of the deputies, most of whom are aligned to Moise’s party, said that t it was up to those who are accusing to provide evidence of violations of the Constitution.Other legislators said they were disappointed that those who had been demanding for several months this special sitting so as to put to the vote a motion to impeach the Head of State, were not in a position to do so.Opposition deputies began to use megaphones to disrupt the Assembly when the Speaker of the Majority tabled a proposal to enforce the agenda, resulting in the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Gary Bodeau, to hold talks with the leaders of the three political parties. But after holding the discussions, Bodeau, said that no agreement had been reached and that the session would continue, a date for which has not been given.According to the Haitian Constitution “the Chamber of Deputies, by a two-thirds majority of its members pronounces the indictment…for the crime of high treason or any other crime or offense committed in the exercise of his functions”.Political observers say that the debate is aimed at prolonging the ratification of the new government, which would also delay the implementation of emergency measures to overcome the economic crisis that the country is facing.Last week, Moise called on Parliament to approve the nomination and government of Prime Minister Fritz William Michel, describing him as “a brilliant civil servant who has devoted his entire career to serving the people of Haiti”.Michel, a former executive in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, became the fourth prime minister of this French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country since President Moise became the head of state in 2017.He has since named an 18-member Cabinet, equally divided between men and women and is waiting to present his general policy statement to parliament.last_img read more

Isha Johansen Seeks Re-election As President Of Sierra Leone Football Association

first_imgIsha Johansen has publically expressed her desire to seek re-election as president of Sierra Leone Football Association despite saying she was a victim of intimidation and discrimination during her first term.“I have decided to run for a second term in office – after careful deliberation. I would like to finish what I started. There is unfinished business.” – Johansen told BBC Sport.Increase in coaches, both male and female; improved national teams and better playing surfaces she ascribes as part of her first term feats. She is Africa’s only female federation president, a feat achieved in 2013 which culminated on the 3rd of August, 2017.Her decision surely will be surprising to the few who would have expected her not to seek re-election with her reign blighted by controversy, infighting and the Ebola crisis.Last year, Johansen spent a night in custody when detained by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) after failing to attend a hearing, whereupon ACC officials and armed police raided the SLFA secretariat.A new date for the election is yet to be made official, but Sanusi Bruski Kargbo, a former ally remains her stiffest opposition in her quest for re-election.Relatedlast_img read more

This is unacceptable.”“Gambling operators are required by the UK Advertising Codes and the conditions of their Gambling Commission licence to advertise responsibly with particular regard to the protection of under 18s and others who are vulnerable to being harmed or exploited by gambling advertising.”UK media reports that the letter has been sent to 450 online gambling firms, further warning that those who failed to adhere to current ASA standards would likely face sanctions. The subject matter of child protections was reviewed by industry legal expert David Clifton (Clifton Davies) for SBC this month, detailing that sector stakeholders be ‘mindful of protecting children’. Guy Cohen – 888casino – Live and kicking

first_img Submit Share StumbleUpon Share Guy Cohen, VP B2C Casino at 888casino.com talks about current live casino trends, and what the future holds for the vertical. The live casino sector is enjoying a major rise in popularity and play right now, with no signs of slowing down. According to H2 Gambling Capital, by the end of the decade the market will be worth more than €1.9bn per year in Europe as more players are drawn to the authentic and interactive experience it offers. In order to achieve, or even surpass this, operators and suppliers will have to work closely together to ensure the live casino experience is constantly improved. This needs to be done via innovative new games and formats, as well as operators designing more studio/gaming environments that deliver variety to players. In recent months, we have launched a number of new games including Speed Roulette as well as an entirely new game variant via Evolution Gaming’s live money wheel game, Dream Catcher. Double Ball roulette is scheduled to follow in a few weeks’ time.Suppliers have also upped the ante when it comes to mobile live dealer; games can now be played seamlessly across all devices, with no downtime or significant differences in the quality of the live experience offered whether on desktop or mobile. This has opened live casino to a new demographic of mobile-only players. In addition, it is now possible for players to play games (including blackjack) in both portrait and landscape modes. This may not sound like a major breakthrough, but it has significantly improved the mobile experience for those who are playing while doing something else. Given the size of some smartphones it is much easier to hold the device in portrait mode. When it comes to designing and developing new casino environments, we have recently pulled back the curtain on an entirely new live dealer studio setting. The 888casino Elite Lounge has been designed for the VIP player.888casino understands that in order to ensure the live casino vertical continues to grow at its current pace, it is vital to provide tailored experiences that meet the various preferences and demands of the players.Obviously it is not just new studio environments that will be key to unlocking growth. Players flock to live dealer because of the authenticity and atmosphere they offer. Studio-based environments certainly provide this, but nothing beats the real thing. As such, we now offer games streamed live from the gaming floors of three prestigious land-based casinos, including the Dragonara Palace Casino in Malta with more planned. This takes the live experience to the next level. It means players are streaming from real roulette tables, located on the floors of real casinos, with real croupiers and most importantly other players that are real. These are people who have walked through the casino door. In addition to transporting players straight to the heart of the action, it has the added benefit of strengthening their trust in the game because the tables are being run by land-based operators.Dual-Play (as it is known) is an incredible experience and showcases just how powerful and cutting-edge live technology is. The big question is where it will go next and how the player experience can be enhanced even further. Some believe augmented and virtual reality hold the key to this, but at present I am undecided. This is partly because it is still early days for VR technology and it has yet to be adopted in mainstream online gaming, let alone with live dealers. In addition, I am unsure exactly how it will improve the experience, other than perhaps immersing players deeper in the digital/real-world casino environment. For the time being, I think that the major growth is going to come from the new formats and variants being developed and from operators designing new and exciting live casino studios and environments. It is certainly a hugely exciting vertical and one 888casino believes will become substantial in its own right over the next few yearslast_img read more
