first_imgSo far so good for local area farmers and ranchers, as we move toward a new spring seeding season, with nearly double the average precipitation total, for the first three months of the year.The norm for the first quarter of a calendar year in this area, is 69.3 millimeters, but this year the unofficial Environment Canada total through yesterday{March 31st} was 137.3.We’re also running at a pace, more than double last year’s total, of 58.2 millimeters.- Advertisement -However, it’s worth remembering, where we really ran into drought trouble last year, was in the June-July period, when the two heaviest precipitation months of the year…which annually average more than 150 millimeters…resulted in only about a third of that total.For those of you wondering how much snow we shovelled this past winter, the total for the five month period ending yesterday, was 192.7 centimeters, and the norm for that period is 148.5.We exceeded the average in each of those months, except November, when we got only 14.6 centimeters, or about half the norm.
