European clubs rule out further changes to Champions League

first_imgBy Brian HomewoodGENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) – Europe’s biggest clubs do not want any more changes to the Champions League in the next few years, they said yesterday, promising to avoid a repetition of the ‘soap opera’ which surrounded the competition last year.UEFA last year announced significant changes to the competition for the 2018-21 cycle, rearranging the group-stage slots in favour of the four top-ranked leagues — in effect Spain, England, Germany and Italy — at the expense of the smaller ones.The decision came amid reports that the biggest clubs had held talks over the creation of a so-called Super League if they did not get their way, and was criticised by some of Europe’s smaller leagues who said they had not been consulted.Andrea Agnelli, who was appointed chairman of the European Club Association (ECA) yesterday after Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stepped aside, said he did not envisage further changes for the subsequent 2021-24 cycle.“I am comfortable in stating that the majority is in favour of the Champions League as it is, and also for the 21-24 cycle, and that will give it some stability going forward,” Agnelli, the chairman of Italian champions Juventus, told reporters.“We are not expecting a soap opera going forward as the Champions League cycle is pretty much set for 2021-24.”Although Agnelli’s comments may put paid to further talk of a breakaway, they could also frustrate those who were hoping that last year’s changes could be reversed.Agnelli said he agreed with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin that the rich-poor divide in European football needed to be addressed, although not at the expense of further growth of the biggest clubs.“We want a competition that is interesting and we want to see games that reach the last minute with the result in the balance,” he said. “Stronger teams becoming stronger is not an issue but there are elements that need to be addressed.”Agnelli said he was not concerned about possible overspending by clubs in the transfer market during the summer, despite Paris St Germain smashing the record by splashing out 222 million euros (£203.67 million) on Brazilian forward Neymar.“If the system is healthy, those transactions are fair. This year’s numbers just confirmed the growth rate we had for the past seven years,” he said.He also suggested that UEFA’s break-even rule known as Financial Fair Play needed to be re-written, having achieved its initial goals of cutting overdue bills and overall losses.“As a manager you should be looking at the balance sheet and value creation in the long term, and not the Profit and Loss statement,” he said.“The P & L was the perfect tool to address the overdue payables and the overall losses of the system. Passive House 2: Reader Questions and Responses

I will relay our conversation to you, at least the relevant parts, which could come fewer and farther between as the drinks continue to flow. Who knows, if it sounds good it could end up as a podcast.Check out pictures of the project at my Flickr page.I am totally charged about the number of responses I’ve gotten from the first Passive House blog. In this entry, I will list them (paraphrased). I think it’s best to dive into these issues one by one and pick them apart since they are getting into the real understanding of these green building practices. Here’s a list of questions from your input:Dan S: How did the project team refine and decide on the products and equipment used for the home?Dan S: Why did they choose the guidelines and resources used to guide the project?Dean D: Could you share information about energy recovery ventilators?Bruce C: How did the project team decide on the windows used in the project?Boone G (A Green Builder buddy of mine): Should up-front money be invested in the thermal efficiency of the envelope, or would it be better spent on other systems? At what point does the return on invest become impractical?John B: Could we share home plans, project team comments, (including the HERS rater) and data from the project?Pat M: Since closed-cell foam manufacturers say that the perm ratings of their foams is about the same as oriented strand board, does the high permeability of open-cell foam make a whole hill of beans’ difference?Brian K (Another Green Builder Buddy of mine): Does Manual J or other modeling software underestimate the effects of passive solar, or does the Passive House software kick us rear end?Donald L: What’s the best way to hit R-60 in the roof that I am about to build? I’m considering 16-in. parallel chord trusses to get an open ceiling, with 1/4-in. ply to get a vented roof, 2 in. XPS foam with the seams taped below the trusses and the space filled with 15″ of blown-in fiberglass insulation. Would foam on the bottom of the sheathing be better for air sealing?Here’s a list of comments:Dan S suggests going ahead and spraying enough foam in the rafter cavities to fill the space—and use it in the walls.Bruce C: Forego the expensive triple-pane windows for more foam.John S: Heating degree days outnumber cooling degree days in Asheville 5 to 1, and summers are relatively mild. Shading and night window ventilation should be adequate to maintain comfort.John S has the benefit of “free” cooling from his heat pump water heater.Boone G (A Green Builder Buddy of mine): Another West Asheville Passive House is using hempcrete, which is advertised as carbon negative.John B has a “half passive” home in north Texas. Appliances and occupants add heat energy and moisture to the home year-round.Pat M: The majority of foam’s thermal resistance is provided by the first 3 to 4 inches of thickness. The R-value improvement beyond that is relatively minimal. Here’s what Icynene has to say about that. Pat M: A hybrid of foam and another type of insulation in the ceiling/roof will save money. Pat M: Use foam instead of cellulose in the walls for the air-sealing advantage. Pat M: Owens Corning has a new product called Energy Complete that is air sealing coupled with insulation. John B: While VaproShield is advertised as an air barrier, the team should consider it as a weather shield. Brian K (yet another green builder buddy of mine): The cooling-dominated load is very surprising. [Brian is working on a Passive House in West Asheville, and the Manual J calls for 6.1 MMBtu/year as opposed to 3.1 for cooling, and has a very strong passive solar design.] John S: The cooling design load is larger than the heating design load for this home, but annual cooling load is lower than the annual heating load for the Asheville area. John S: The biggest difference between the Passive House Planning Package software versus HERS software is how PHPP treats window ratings and thermal bridging. In general, it seems that PHPP is more accurate and detailed than REM/Rate.Chris Otohal’s (owner, engineer, and builder) comments:Cellulose is appealing due to its extremely low embodied energy. Chris and his installer are considering installing drywall first and then cellulose to achieve the appropriate density. He likes the idea of a thin layer of foam first, followed by cellulose.Chris decided on Vaproshield when he decided to use Corten siding. He is using Vaproshield’s Wrapshield product, lapping and taping the seams, which the company states will provide an effective air barrier. The project team is not solely relying on that, however.The heating and cooling loads were determined by energy modeling performed by the US Passive House Institute using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP). Chris is working on getting the data for us to share with you. The data are dependent on compliance with the air infiltration criteria of 0.6 ACH at 50 Pascals.This home will not receive Passive House certification, which requires an annual heat requirement of 15 kwh/m2 due to the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of the windows. Chris opted for less expensive Inline Fiberglass windows from Toronto. Thermotech windows were recommended, which had a higher SHGC but were $9,000 more expensive. Chris’ home will be closer to 20 kwh/m2/yr. The extra $9,000 would have resulted in an ROI of 180 years. Chris will be following the PH guidelines, but the home will fall short of certification.I have tons of comments and opinions on all of these topics, but I am going to hold on to them so that I can approach these topics methodically.
