WHITTIER – The Radisson Hotel, 7329 Greenleaf Ave., will be the site for the sixth Annual Soroptimist Showcase of Stars at 6 p.m. Feb. 23. The fundraising dinner includes a silent auction, talent show and awards. Following a social hour, dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person and include dinner and the show. Literacy council to hold fundraiser WHITTIER – The Whittier Area Literacy Council’s Second Annual Love of Reading fundraiser will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at its facility at 12911 Hadley St. Sample soups will be provided by the following restaurants: Crepes and Grapes, Phlight, Sage Restaurant and Lounge and Greenleaf Cafe. Writings by literacy students will be presented. Poet Tony Barnstone will be guest speaker. Door prizes will be provided by Mervyns, California Grill and Amachi. Crafts for children will also be featured. Admission will be $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Area’s top orators are announced WHITTIER – American Legion Whittier Post 51 announces the winners of the 2007 National High School Oratorical Contest. First place went to Irma Giron, an 11th-grader from Santa Fe High School. Second place went to Ian Jimenez, a 12th-grader from Whittier High School. Third place was earned by Stephanie Cuevas, an 11th-grader from Whittier High School.
