Election may alter plans for fire house

first_imgLA HABRA HEIGHTS – It was only a month ago when the City Council settled on a site for the construction of a new fire station. But Tuesday’s election might change that. Voters elected attorney Layne Baroldi and businessman Howard Vipperman – and both oppose the council’s decision to build the fire station at the southwest corner of Hacienda and West Roads. Along with Councilman Stan Carroll, who also opposed the Hacienda/West site, the three could create a new majority to overturn the decision. “A lot is going to be riding on Mr. Carroll,” said Councilman Fred Klein, who lost his re-election bid Tuesday, bringing an end to his 13 years on the council. “I want to talk to the city manager as much as I can before I make that decision,” he said. “You should make the decision on the facts.” Vipperman and Baroldi both said they believe the council should put off a vote, scheduled to be made at tonight’s 7:30 meeting, on hiring a company to handle an environmental review of the fire station site. Baroldi attributed his strong victory – he received 40 percent of the vote – to his strategy of door-to-door campaigning. “I made a commitment to go to every door in La Habra Heights,” he said. “I covered about 85 percent of the mileage of the streets of the city. If you’re going to run for an office, you should meet the people.” Klein attributed his loss to several factors, including the fact that he had been on the council for a long time. Also, a low voter turnout of 35 percent did not help. “I’ve been there 13 years and have a record the others could shoot at, where those running against me had no record,” he said. “My vote against the (zoning) ordinance hurt me with one part of the residents and the vote on the fire house hurt with another.” [email protected] (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3022160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Carroll has not offered an alternate location but instead has said he wants the city to first survey residents on where they would put the new station. Vipperman said Wednesday he plans to lead the charge to reverse the council’s decision. He wants the new fire station built at the same site where the existing facility is now, near City Hall. “I believe the voters in La Habra Heights have sent a clear message to the City Council: Don’t put the fire station at West and Hacienda,” he said. Vipperman believes leaving the fire station where it is located now is a less-expensive alternative than building at the Hacienda/West site. Baroldi, however, said he’s not sure where the new station should go. last_img read more
